SEBRING — Tuesday afternoon’s game between the Campbell and Sebring boys basketball teams featured two programs at different stages.
The Red Devils have recent playoff success and are trying to work their way back to that level after losing key players to graduation last year. Meanwhile, the Trojans are trying to rebuild their program.
And it was on display as Campbell beat the Trojans 72-18 at Sebring High School.
“We just look at every game as a learning opportunity, whether that’s a win or a loss,” Campbell head coach Paolo DePasquale said.
Campbell had opportunities, but struggled to knock down shots in the first few minutes. After only leading 5-3 through the first four minutes, the Red Devils started putting points on the board thanks to forced turnovers and offensive rebounds.
The Red Devils scored 18 unanswered points to close the first with a 23-3 lead.
That stretch was part of a 33-0 run by the Red Devils, which ended when Sebring’s Isaac Brooks converted a layup midway through the second quarter.
Campbell was in control and took a 50-5 lead into halftime. The third quarter started with a running clock.
“One thing I was proud of our guys today was how well we were able to switch up our defenses, whether that’s a run-and-jump to a 1-2-2. I thought they did a really good job,” DePasquale said. “It shows that they were focused coming into it.”
The Red Devils extended their lead to 61-7 by the end of the third, and they emptied their bench to start the fourth.
Campbell’s Jawaun Johnson led all scorers with 19 points as the Red Devils (3-4, 3-3 Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Scarlet Tier) had four finish in double figures. DJ Lambert scored 15, Jeff Driskell added 12 and Bobby Rameriz tallied 11.
Zach Todd led the Trojans (0-8, 0-6 MVAC Scarlet) with seven points, and Jake Johnson added five more.
Sebring is still looking for its first win of the season. Sebring head coach Lee Knepp said he wanted his guys to work on the fundamentals and find ways to improve during Tuesday’s matchup.
“I want our guys to keep on buying into our principles – effort, attitude, going out and competing,” Knepp said. “Trusting the process and getting better each day, whether a practice or a game.”
After dropping their first two games of the season to Western Reserve and Lowellville, the Red Devils are starting to find some consistency. They have won three of their last five, which included four road games.
“I think we’ve really grown a lot since Game 1, and that’s only been a few weeks now,” DePasquale said. “But I want to see us continue to grow and continue in that right direction. I try to tell them all the time, if we keep doing what we’re doing, we keep working hard, eventually this thing’s going to pop off and we’re going to start putting together some wins.”
