Pirates get Garcia, Traveiso in 5-player deal with Boston

The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia and right-handed pitcher Jesus Travieso from the Boston Red Sox, in exchange for right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo, left-handed pitcher Tyler Samaniego and catcher Adonys Guzman.

Garcia, who turns 23 on Dec. 11, was rated by MLB Pipeline (No. 3) and Baseball America (No. 6) as a top-10 prospect in Boston’s system when he was acquired. He was also rated by Baseball America (No. 76) and MLB Pipeline (No. 85) as a top-100 prospect in baseball when he was acquired. Garcia was tabbed by Baseball America as the “Best Power Hitter” in Boston’s organization when he was acquired.

Garcia spent the majority of 2025 in the minor leagues, hitting a combined .267 (116-for-434) with 17 doubles, four triples, 21 home runs, 75 RBI, 45 walks, 79 runs scored and an .810 OPS in 114 games split between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester. He led all Red Sox minor leaguers in home runs, total bases (204) and runs, while also ranking second in hits and tied for second in RBI and extra-base hits (42). He paced all full-season minor leaguers in the system in both slugging (.470) and OPS.

Garcia played in five games with Boston, including his MLB debut on August 22 at Yankee Stadium.

Garcia, who was originally signed by the Red Sox as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2019, batted .261 (352-for-1347) with 67 doubles, 21 triples, 55 home runs, 209 RBI, 166 walks, 42 stolen bases, 257 runs and an .816 OPS in 370 minor league games during his five seasons (2021-25) in the system.

The 18-year-old Travieso went a combined 3-3 with a 3.06 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 19 appearances (16 starts) split between the Rookie-Level FCL Red Sox and Low-A Salem last season.

Travieso, who was originally signed by Boston as a non-drafted free agent on Jan. 15, 2024, had a 3.80 ERA in 11 starts with the Rookie-Level DSL Red Sox Blue during the 2024 season.
