BOYS BASKETBALL

Ursuline 74, Pickerington Central 65 — Juniors Jaylen Gunther (30) and Noah Bell (27) combined for 57 points in the Fighting Irish’s win over Pickerington Central at the Capital Shootout at Capital University in Columbus. Alex Simon also had 13 points for Ursuline. A. Snyder led the Tigers with 19 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

South Range 67, Springfield 51 — South Range saw four reach double figures in the win. Nick Toy led the way with 16 points, Tommy Valentine added 14, Gavin Hiscox contributed 13 and Julian Tranovich ended with 11. Mario Gentile scored 13 points for the Tigers, and Matt Wymer added 12.

Smithville 66, Grand Valley 59 — Smithville led the majority of the game. The Mustangs tried to claw back and take the lead, but they didn’t have enough firepower. Evan Skrtic led all scorers with 23 points for Grand Valley. Carter Turk added 16 points, and Payton Plizga finished with 13. Brennan Piatt was the Smithies’ leading scorer with 19 points.

Heartland Christian 61, Valley Christian 31 — Stats were not reported.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Ursuline 46, Austintown Fitch 42 — The Fighting Irish outscored the Falcons 21-13 in the middle quarters to create a little breathing room. Ursuline’s Kennedy Carpenter led all scorers with 22 points. Maizy Green added 11 points, and Carly Casey ended with nine. Amiya Harris led the Falcons with 17 points, Kylie Folkwein had 14 and Kaelyn Bower finished with 10.

LaBrae 53, Poland 48 — Poland led 41-36 at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Vikings outscored the Bulldogs 17-7 to earn the win. LaBrae’s Ella Kuszmaul scored a game-high 22 points, Angel Scruggs tallied 15 points and Ally Magoulick ended the afternoon with nine points. Brooklyn Kosco led the Bulldogs with 13 points, Leanna Boccieri had 10 points and Bristol Rowe and Isabel Greco each scored nine.

Salem 51, Girard 45 — Abby Knickerbocker led the Quakers with a double-double (24 points and 11 rebounds). Maddy Andres finished with 17 points and eight boards, and Karlie Sampson added seven points and six rebounds. Caylee Wilkes was the Indians’ only double-digit scorer, finishing with 23 points. Adria Peterman added eight points for Girard.

Columbiana 48, Mineral Ridge 46 — Sullivan Sandy led the Rams with 14 points in the loss. Kylee Molnar followed with 11 points and Gianna Gilbert had eight. Columbiana stats were not reported.

Lakeview 62, Mogadore 44 — The Bulldogs had four end the day with double-digit points in the win. Annie Humphrey led Lakeview with 12 points, Kalyssa Werner added 11 and Paige Schwartz and Mack Stowe each had 10. Kasey Balyard was the only double-digit scorer for Mogadore. She scored 18 points.

North Allegheny (Pa.) 56, Howland 30 — North Allegheny controlled the first half, taking a 26-13 lead into the locker room. Maya Kubancsek scored a team-high 11 points for the Tigers, and Teagan Bell had six. Vange Balouris led all scorers with 24 points for North Allegheny.

Lisbon 42, Garfield 24 — Ava Dobay scored 10 points for the G-Men, and Sofia Brown scored a game-high 16 points for Lisbon. Further stats were not reported.

BOYS WRESTLING

The Howland wrestling team took third out of 28 teams at the Hudson Holiday Tournament.

Aidan O’Donnell took first place at 150 pounds with 31.5 team points. He went undefeated with three tech falls, a pin and a major decision.

Brayden Cortese (113), Deacon Mock (144), Eddie Morrison (157) and Cohen Rudesill (165) each were the runner-up in their respective weight classes. Cortese, Rudesill and Morrison each had three pins, and Mock finished with three falls and a tech fall.

Owen Dreher placed fifth by picking up two pins and two major decisions after an early loss.

SWIMMING

Boardman had a pair of winners at the Canton Christmas High School Invitational.

Alex Taylor clocked a 57.35 in the girls 100-yard backstroke to set a new team record. Zac Mihok also picked up a win for the Spartans, winning the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:46.07.

Springfield’s Paige McCombs took the girls 50 freestyle with a 24.26. She also won the 100 freestyle after swimming 52.39.

The Boardman girls finished fourth with 185 points. They finished behind Mason (337), North Canton Hoover (212) and St. Ursula Academy (202). Springfield came in fifth with 127 points, Canfield was 10th with 68, Crestview was 23rd with 6 and Columbiana came in 24th with five.

The Boardman boys were fifth with 109 points, ended behind Mason (537), St. Xavier (151), Wyoming (147) and Granville (120). Ursuline finished 18th with 23 points, Salem was 23rd with 13, Poland came in 25th with 12 and Crestview was 27th with four.

FROM LATE FRIDAY

BOYS BASKETBALL

Ursuline 73, Canfield 62 — Ursuline junior Jaylen Gunther scored his 1,000th career point in the win. Gunther led all scorers with 34 points, and Noah Bell finished with 24 points for the Fighting Irish. Joey Gabriel led the Cardinals with 28 points, and Jace Riccardo added 16.

Carrollton 67, Salem 35 — The middle quarters were the difference, as Carrollton outscored the Quakers 39-21 in the second and third frames. Salem’s Deontay Steele led all scorers with 20 points, and Ben Severe added seven points.

Lisbon 78, East Palestine 67 — Lisbon’s offense was on full display as the Blue Devils scored at least 20 points in three of the four quarters. East Palestine’s RJ May scored a game-high 27 points, Kealin Simon added 13 and Drew Bycroft tallied 11. Aiden Ramgeet had a 23-point, 10-rebound double-double for the Blue Devils. Remgeet also had seven assists. Logan Sturgeon added 17 points for Lisbon, and Blaine Barnes finished with 13.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Howland 53, Warren G. Harding 45 — Harding scored 21 points in the first quarter, but the Tigers outscored the Raiders 14-3 in the second to take a 25-24 lead in halftime. Howland limited Harding to 10 points in the third and 11 in the fourth to pull away for the win. Talia Rishel led the Tigers with 14 points, Mia Thomas finished with 13 and Maya Kubancsek added 10. Trinity Taylor led all scorers with 19 points for the Raiders. Cayden Reed ended the day with nine points.
