Girard’s Pearson wins OPOY; Mooney’s Colaprete named COY

The All-Ohio football teams were announced on Tuesday for Divisions IV and V, and the area saw to receive major honors.

Girard sophomore quarterback AJ Pearson was named one of the Division V Offensive Players of the Year, joining Liberty Center’s Garrison Kruse and Africentric’s Caleb Anthony. Meanwhile, Cardinal Mooney’s Frank Colaprete was one of the D-V Coaches of the Year, alongside Wheelersburg’s Rob Woodward.

Another fellow Indian, Dylan Latell, joined Pearson on the first team as an offensive lineman. Cardinal Mooney linebacker Rocco Zabel also made the first team, along with Garfield running back Ryder Cain.

Girard’s Allen Hess-Cardona was a second-team defensive lineman, and Mooney’s Kejuan Dean joined him. Liberty’s Dawaun Moody was a second team quarterback, Vito Komara made it at receiver and South Range linebacker Drew Starkey also made the second squad.

Several area players made the cut for the third team. Pymatuning had a couple with linebacker Sean Croston and quarterback Justin Britton, Girard freshman Mario Lipinski and Garfield’s Brandyn Bogucki both were listed at receiver, South Range’s Nick Toy joined Britton at quarterback and Poland’s Greyson Shaffer made it on the offensive line.

A dozen locals received honorable mention. That group was: Kasen Bailey (Pymatuning Valley running back), Jaycee Fulkman (Pymatuning Valley receiver), Stuart Jenick (Pymatuning Valley offensive lineman), Ike Lake (Cardinal Mooney running back), Dewey Heard (Cardinal Mooney offensive lineman), John Brenner (Cardinal Mooney tight end), Dyionn Tutwiler (Liberty running back), Davon Perry (Liberty defensive lineman), Tommy Titus (South Range defensive back), Gavin Hiscox (South Range defensive back), Jon Tonya (Poland offensive lineman), Kolt Arnold (Poland defensive lineman) Braxton Sloan (Girard defensive back) and Logan Sell (Garfield linebacker).

Columbus Academy’s Gabe Davis-Ray was named the Defensive Player of the Year.

DIVISION IV

West Branch had a pair of honorees on the first team as Jeremiah Thomas made it as a receiver and Zach Coffee was recognized along the offensive line.

The area also had a couple of quarterbacks make it onto the second team as West Branch’s Grady Hirst joined Hubbard’s Braydon Songer, who also earned Trumbull County Player of the Year last week. The Warriors had one more on the second team, with Gavin Gregory making it among the defensive lineman.

The third team saw Salem’s Cletis Monroy at quarterback, and Hubbard had a pair in defensive lineman Antonio Burkley and defensive back Mike Hazimihalis.

Honorable mention recipients were Struthers receiver Anthony Pastella, Salem offensive lineman Matthew Austin and Niles linebacker Vinny Broll.

Shelby’s Brayden DeVito and Indian Valley’s Grady Kinsey were named the D-IV Offensive Players of the Year. Glenville’s Cincere Johnson was the Defensive Player of the Year, and Shelby’s Rob Mahaney received Coach of the Year.
