Area cross country runners conclude season at OHSAA state meet

The high school cross country season concluded on Saturday with the OHSAA state meet at Fortress Obetz.

Maplewood, McDonald, Boardman and Salem sent teams, while there were a number of local individual runners that participated in the sport’s final weekend.

BOYS

Maplewood had the best performance among the local teams. The Rockets finished sixth in the Division IV meet with 268 points, and running rival McDonald came in 14th after scoring 355.

Maplewood’s top runner was Andrew Donaldson, who came in 61st by running 16:53.10. Ethan Nevinski had a 16:55.38 and came in 66th, Micah Sparks had a 17:06.59 for 84th, Nick Blair ended in 112th with a 17:26.21, Tyler McPeak crossed in 122nd after recording a 17:36.60, Zach Suba was 131st with 17:39.94 and Logan Gladd ended the day in 152nd with a 17:57.12.

For McDonald, Joey Cappuzzello led the way with a 23rd-place finish and a time of 16:14.56. Owen Cappuzzello wasn’t too far in the rearview mirror, finishing 32nd with a 16:27.78. Landen Scott came in at 17:39.10 for 129th, Caleb Lytle posted an 18:13.73 for 165th, Hudson Flere had an 18:30.90 for 180th, Jaxton Mooney-Lancaster made it across in 18:43.53 for 189th and Zach Delka was 213rd with 22:55.60.

Boardman ended the day in 12th with 329 points in Division II.

Jacob Turek was the Spartans’ best performer, finishing 37th out of 215 participants with a 16:22.06.

Dominic Theodore ran 16:37.05 for 66th, Dylan White came in 94th with 16:48.54, Adam Nigro ran 17:19.38 for 144th, Chase Moore finished 154th with 17:27.26, Tommy Sullivan III came in 183rd at 17:49.58 and Jonathan Burgos-Perez was right behind him at 184th with 17:51.04.

GIRLS

Salem took sixth with 256 points — the top team outing by a local girls team — while competing in the Division III race.

The Quakers were packed together in their times. Laura Hovorka was Salem’s top time with 19:52.34, finishing 61st. Addison Hopple was 74th via a time of 20:05.44, Cassidy Wallace was 81st with a 20:11.94, Liliana Pimentel-Alexander was directly behind in 82nd at 20:12.33, Emily Sinsley came in 118th after clocking a 20:39.42, Paige Menough finished 127th at 20:53.89 and Chaya Murray was the final Salem runner with 21:14.59 for 146th.

Maplewood tallied 271 points to finish eighth in the Division IV competition, and McDonald ended in 13th with 330.

Mackenzie Edgar had the best time for the Rockets, finishing with a 19:02.10 for 17th. Reagan Mahan ran 20:09.54 for 57th, Melody Richards was 76th with 20:25.34, Ava Liptak posted a 21:18.14 for 127th, Tessa Dicapo registered a 21:23.38 to come in 137th, Anna Cook came in 152nd with a 21:47.86, Ava Calvert crossed in 177 after running 22:37.91

McDonald’s Naomi Sheesely concluded another stellar season with a fourth-place run, getting an 18:38.94. Selah Sheesley came in 110th with a time of 20:55.56, Addison Callow ran 20:59.51 for 116th, Mary Jasso came in at 21:18.78 for 129th, Juliana Krumpak had a 21:42.69 to finish 148th, Rita Domitrovich ran 21:54.57 as she was awarded 157th and Elyse Evans ended in 207 with a 25:07.60.

The Boardman girls team finished 10th in Division II with 303 points.

Olivia Brady was the top Spartan with a time of 18:55.37, which was good enough for 25th out of 216 runners, and Haley Bero was Boardman’s other top-50 runner as she came in 37th with a 19:11.81. Kealia Bravo ran 19:45.12 for 83rd, Moriah Doyle clocked a 20:12.21 for 118th, Lauryn Swantek was timed at 20:49.50 as she finished 156th, Matilda Mausteller had a 21:30.91 for 186th and Jemma Pavone was 213th with a 22:32.30

INDIVIDUALS

Heartland Christian standout Rebecca Geiss finished as the Division IV girls runner-up for the second consecutive year and her third straight year with a top-two finish. She ran 18:11.81 to take the silver medal in a field that featured 214 runners.

Also in Division IV, Chalker’s Abbey Castle clocked 18:58.63 to end in 15th, and Mineral Ridge’s Kylee Molnar ended her season in 23rd with a 19:09.44.

Garfield’s Lina Kaufman had a top-20 finish in the Division III girls run, as she claimed 20th with a time of 18:53.74.

Also in the girls Division III race, Lakeview’s Kendall DeLeon finished 64th after running 19:54.98 and Poland’s Jocelyne Salaty ran 21:03.42 for 132nd.

Austintown Fitch’s Lilly Trolio took 124th in the girls Division II race with a 20:18.44.

Lowellville’s Nate Yon was the top area runner on the boys side. He came in ninth in Division IV after finishing with a 16:02.41. Steven Yon also registered a top-75 time of 16:56.88 as he ended in 68th.

Grand Valley’s Sam Steimle was right behind Nate Yon, coming in 10th with a time of 16:03.92.

On the boys’ end of Division II, Salem’s Sam Yakubek was 49th after running 16:27.43, and teammate Luke Stephens came in 102nd with a 16:52.87.

Canfield also had a pair of runners in Division II. Alexander Hammar was 52nd with 16:30.20, and Alex Taranto registered a 172nd-place finish by running 17:38.98.

In Division IV, Mineral Ridge’s Josiah Toth ran 16:54.71 for 64th.
