Twenty teams sit in playoff spots in latest computer ratings

The final week of the high school football season is here, and 20 teams are in place for a playoff spot, according to the latest OHSAA computer ratings.

The top-12 teams will make the playoffs this season, with the four best teams in each region earning a first-round bye. Additionally, the higher seed will host a playoff game through the regional semifinals of the tournament. The regional finals and state semifinals will be

Tuesday’s ratings have Austintown Fitch in third with 22.4236 points in Division II, Region 5, after being second last week.

In Division III, Region 9, Canfield was still the top team with 30.6919 points. And East was just on the outside of the playoffs in 13th place with 11.4778 points as the Golden Bears are set to play the final City Series game against Chaney on Saturday at noon.

Division IV, Region 13, had West Branch (19.8232) in third. Hubbard (14.7778) was ninth and Salem (12.6333) was 10th.

The four top teams in Division V, Region 17, remain the same, but yet again they are in a different order. Girard (24.1717) overtook Cardinal Mooney for the top spot as the Cardinals (24.0139) slipped to second. Poland (18.1333) remained in third, and Garfield (14.1313) was still fourth.

Liberty (10.9222) was still in sixth, South Range (8.7833) fell to 11th after falling to Mooney and Pymatuning Valley (8.7331) fell from ninth to 12th after beating winless Cardinal.

Crestview (19.9722) moved up one spot to second after beating Garfield. Mineral Ridge (12.5454) jumped from 10th to eighth, Springfield (12.2639) fell one spot to ninth and Columbiana (8.1875) leaped from 16th to 12th after knocking off East Palestine.

There is a lot on the line in Division VII, Region 25, heading into the final week.

McDonald (15.6375) moved up a spot to second as it prepares to play rival Mineral Ridge for a shot at an undefeated regular season. And East Palestine (9.3384) stayed in fifth and is one spot away from a first-round bye.

There are three local teams separated by 0.29 points in the 11th, 12th and 13th spots. Lowellville (4.8957) was listed in 11th with Springfield coming to town, Warren JFK (4.85) was 12th as it makes a trip to Division III Lutheran East and Jackson-Milton (4.6066) was just outside a playoff spot in 13th as the Blue Jays welcome Western Reserve to North Jackson.

The final computer ratings will determine the tournament field. They will be released on Sunday morning.
