Stellar Songer leads Hubbard offense to win over Lakeview

HUBBARD — Hubbard senior quarterback Braydon Songer’s command of the offense is a big reason why the Eagles find themselves sitting at 7-1 through Week 8.

Songer has averaged roughly 246 passing yards per game this season, and nearly reached that total in the first half of Hubbard’s dominating 42-0 victory over Lakeview during Homecoming on Friday night at Hubbard Memorial Stadium.

“He’s done a really good job or just making good reads and making good throws down the field,” Hubbard head coach Brian Hoffman said of Songer. “I think he brings a lot of confidence to our offense, and we have a lot of guys that we feel confident in getting the football to. … Braydon, he’s our catalyst. And when the play breaks down, he’s been able to kind of move around in the pocket and make some things happen, and that’s always helpful with your offense.”

Songer was almost perfect against the Bulldogs, throwing for over 250 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 30 yards and had a rushing touchdown.

While Songer has led Hubbard in rushing this season, that honor against Lakeview went to tailback Michael Hazimihalis, who finished with 44 rushing yards and three total touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving.

Anthony Clark set the school record for receptions in a single game with 11, finishing with over 120 all-purpose yards and one touchdown.

“It helps to have guys around that are able to make plays,” Hoffman said. “We were able to distribute the ball pretty well to all of our receivers and our running backs. It was a good, sound win for us offensively. I felt like we had solid drives every time and we finished them off with touchdowns. We want to improve every week. I feel like the last three weeks we’ve gotten better. Obviously the last two games of the season are huge challenges for us with Girard and South Range.”

The Eagles received the opening kickoff and proceeded to march down the field with ease against an overmatched Bulldogs defense. Songer finished the drive by connecting with receiver Anthony Clark for a 22-yard touchdown for Hubbard’s first score.

After a Lakeview punt, Songer and the Eagles went to work again. This time, Hazimihalis punched the ball into the end zone from a yard out to give Hubbard a two-score advantage by the end of the first quarter.

“I thought we fought hard,” Lakeview head coach Ron DeJulio Jr. said. “They’re a really good team. Well-disciplined. No. 7 (Songer) is a heck of a quarterback. They’re well-rounded, hard to stop and very athletic.”

At that point, the Eagles’ defense began to flex its muscles. The Bulldogs mustered just 46 total yards against Hubbard’s defense and turned the ball over three times.

On consecutive possessions, Hubbard forced a Lakeview turnover. The first was a fumble recovery, while the second came when Rome Odem picked off Bulldogs quarterback Asa Lantz as he tried to just throw the ball away under duress.

Hubbard scored three times in the second quarter. The first came on a 3-yard run from Songer at the beginning of the period.

“No. 7 (Songer), he makes things happen running around,” DeJulio said. “He gets out of tackles and if you don’t contain him, he’s going to hurt you.”

Then Hazimihalis got back in the end zone after catching a 9-yard pass from Songer. Hazimihalis capped off the Eagles’ scoring in the first half with a 20-yard run in which he broke about four or five tackles, putting Hubbard up 35-0 at the break.

Hubbard added one more touchdown on its first offensive possession of the second half before putting in the reserves with the running clock.

The Eagles ran a series of jet sweeps that moved them down the field, before Antonio Burkley piled into the end zone from 2 yards out.

“We got a lot of young guys,” DeJulio said. “They gotta get experience. We gotta keep them up to speed and learn from this.”
