RAVENNA — The Poland boys golf team was among the final teams to have their score calculated, but when all was said and done, the Bulldogs were atop the scoreboard.
The Bulldogs won the Division II district tournament on Tuesday at Windmill Lakes Golf Course in Ravenna. The win will send Poland to its second straight trip to the state tournament.
“They’re gamers. We had a lot of challenges this year. We had some ups, we had some downs, but I think at this point in time, we’re clicking as a team,” Poland head coach Chris Martin said. “I don’t think we played our best golf. We played here over the summer in an invite and we had a better score, but you did what you had to do today. And I think, as a team, they’re relying on each other and they’re meshing together every round.
“We’re going to state. Just play your best golf there and see what happens.”
Poland’s Angelo Rinaldi was the runner-up after carding a 73. Matthew Morrone was second on the team with a 77, Ryan Lombardo chipped in an 80 and AJ Battaglia was the fourth and final scorer with an 82.
“We’re very fortunate,” Martin said. “We got a good core group here. Our junior class is deep, and you sprinkle in the seniors that now have a lot of experience — on top of some younger guys that stepped in — just think it makes them better as a group. They love golf, they love practicing. They go together as friends. This group, they’re tight, and I think that builds to this repetitive success
URSULINE CAME CLOSE
Ursuline tied with Gilmour Academy for the third and final spot. Both teams shot 318, but Gilmour Academy took the final team qualifier since its fifth golfer had a better round.
The Fighting Irish will be represented at the state championship, however.
Breen Dahman locked up an individual qualifier after shooting a 74. It was the third-best outing of the day behind West Geauga’s Dylan Phillips (71) and Rinaldi (73).
“Breen went to state as a sophomore with Anthony Bako, so he had a little bit of experience coming in,” Irish head coach Michael Murphy said. “It was just really steady golf, and that’s how he plays. Hits a lot of fairways, hits a lot of greens and he makes a lot of pars. And that was his game plan today, and he followed it perfectly.”
Anthony Bako was second on the team with a 76, Finn Thornton was third with an 81 and Chris Sammartinio was the final official score with an 88. Alex Simon shot a 93, which was used to settle the tie-breaker with Gilmour Academy.
“In the past, 318 would be a score that would get you to state,” Murphy said. “They played extremely good golf, they fought all the way till the end. Just unfortunate it went to a scorecard playoff, but I’m really proud of the way they played. Normally it’s good enough, it just wasn’t this year.”
OTHER PERFORMANCES
There were several other area golfers that participated in Ravenna on Tuesday. However, they were unable to move on to the championship.
Hubbard sent a pair in Colten Smith and Jonathan Adamson. Smith shot a 79, and Adamson finished with an 85.
South Range’s Jack Carey was a few shots away from qualifying, but he ended his day with a 78.
Pymatuning Valley’s Rylan Compan had to withdraw during his round.
