21 area teams slated for OHSAA football playoffs
After 10 weeks of the regular season, the 2025 OHSAA football playoffs are finally set to begin this Friday.
Twenty-one area teams are hoping to make the postseason journey to Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton for the state championships. The brackets that were released by the OHSAA on Sunday afternoon.
Unless otherwise noted, all first-round games will be played on Friday, with kickoffs set for 7 p.m.
With the reduction of playoff qualifiers per region from 16 to 12, the top four seeds in each region will receive a first-round bye. In the first round, the No. 5 seed will host the No. 12 seed, the No. 6 seed will host the No. 11 seed, the No. 7 seed will host the No. 10 seed, and the No. 8 seed will host the No. 9 seed.
The better-seeded team will serve as the host through the first three rounds of the playoffs. The regional playoffs will follow bracket format. Rebracketing will occur for the state semifinals.
In Division II, Region 5, Austintown Fitch (8-1) earned the No. 3 seed and a first-round bye and will host the winner of No. 11 Uniontown Green (5-5) vs. No. 6 Garfield Heights. Boardman, which earned a playoff spot after its win over Canfield on Friday night, is the No. 9 seed and will travel to face No. 8 Painesville Riverside (7-3).
Canfield (9-1) is the lone local team in Division III, Region 9. The Cardinals are the No. 1 seed and after their first-round bye, will face the winner of No. 9 Madison (7-3) vs. No. 8 Kenston (6-4).
In Division IV, Region 13, West Branch (9-1) is the No. 4 seed with a first-round bye and will take on the winner of No. 12 Ashatbula Edgewood (6-4) vs. No. 5 Norton (9-1). Rival Salem (6-4), which is the No. 10 seed, will travel to face No. 7 seed Canal Fulton Northwest (6-4). Ninth-seeded Hubbard (7-3) also will go on the road to play No. 8 seed Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin (7-3).
Division V, Region 17 is stacked full with seven local teams. Cardinal Mooney (7-2) rose to the top as the No. 1 seed in the region and will host the winner of No. 8 South Range (6-4) vs. No. 9 Burton Berkshire (6-4). Unbeaten Girard (10-0) is slotted as the No. 2 seed and will host the winner of No. 7 Akron Manchester (7-3) vs. No. 10 Richmond Edison (6-4).
Elsewhere in the region, Poland (8-2) earned the No. 3 seed a bye and will face the winner of No. 6 Liberty (8-2) vs. No. 11 Urichsville Claymont (6-4). Rounding out the bracket is No. 4 seed Garfield (8-2), which will host the winner of No. 5 St. Clairsville (7-3) vs. No. 12 Pymatuning Valley (7-3).
Division VI, Region 21 is headlined by undefeated No. 2 seed Crestview (10-0), and after a first-round bye, the Rebels will host the winner of No. 10 Mineral Ridge (7-3) vs. No. 7 Sugarcreek Garaway (7-2). In the first round of the bracket, No. 11 seed Columbiana (7-3) is slated to travel to No. 6 seed Dalton (7-3), while No. 9 seed Springfield will visit No. 8 seed Wickliffe (8-2).
Finally, the area’s third and final remaining undefeated team, McDonald (10-0), is the No. 1 seed in Division VII, Region 25. After their first-round bye, the Blue Devils will host the winner of No. 9 Norwalk St. Paul vs. No. 8 Warren JFK (5-5). Despite starting 0-5, the Eagles won five straight games to earn their playoff spot. In another first-round matchup, No. 11 seed Western Reserve (4-6) will travel to face No. 6 seed East Palestine (7-3).
