Mooney takes to the air in win over Chardon

YOUNGSTOWN — Cardinal Mooney got a big 27-14 victory over Chardon when they hosted the Hilltoppers at Stambaugh Stadium on Saturday.

Mooney (3-2) quarterback, junior Vince Gentile, tossed four touchdown passes in the Cardinals’ triumph.

“The guys played hard,” Cardinal Mooney coach Frank Colaprete said. “Vince (Gentile) did a great job at quarterback. He was mentally sharp and physically sharp. He was spot-on today with his reads, and his calls, and his accuracy. Now, it’s time to start focusing on our next game.”

The Hilltoppers got out to an early 7-0 lead. But, Gentile hooked up with senior tight end John Brenner, who raced 64 yards down the center of the field for a touchdown to tie the score 7-7 heading to the second quarter.

Gentile was back at it when he found senior Kingston Powell in the back of the end zone on the Cardinals’ next drive. Mooney worked their way down the field before the 12-yard touchdown pass gave them a 14-7 advantage heading into halftime.

Gentile’s third touchdown pass came on a 51-yard bomb to junior Brayden Bryant early in the third quarter. The extra point was blocked and the Cardinals took a 20-7 lead.

The Mooney defense forced Chardon to punt and forced a turnover on downs before Gentile put the Cardinals in the end zone once again.

This time, Brenner got open for a 29-yard touchdown catch and Cardinal Mooney had what looked like a comfortable 27-7 advantage.

However, Chardon (3-2) made things a little more interesting before the game came to a conclusion.

The Hilltoppers drove down the field and quarterback Andrew Cole kept it himself for a 6-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 27-14.

Then, when the Cardinals got the ball back, they fumbled it back to Chardon as the third quarter came to an end.

The Hilltoppers drove into Mooney territory. However, the Cardinals’ defense picked off a pass in the end zone on fourth-and-5 from the 15-yard line.

The Cardinals punted on their next possession. Then, Brady Desmond made a pivotal tackle on a fourth-and-2 to give the ball back to Mooney on their own 38-yard line.

The Cardinals had to settle for a 37-yard field goal attempt, but the kick banged off of the right upright with 3:03 remaining in regulation.

Senior Dewey Heard ended the game with a massive tackle as he overpowered the Chardon offensive line.

Starting at $3.23/week.
