BRISTOLVILLE — Two of the better boys soccer programs in the Mahoning Valley squared off on Monday afternoon, but it was Bristol that came away the winner.
The Panthers won their fourth straight game, downing Campbell 6-1 behind Bristol High School.
Bristol (9-1) scored three straight goals in the first half to take control early and put Campbell (6-3) on its heels. Carson Weston, Lawrence Workman and Wyatt Clisby each scored the Panthers’ first-half goals.
“That’s one of our issues, coming out quick. We needed to get one or two at least before half,” Bristol head coach Cory Schrecengost said. “We watched film on Campbell. We knew they were a really good team and we needed to come out and own the first half and just finish the game.”
CJ Sarigianopoulos got the Red Devils on the board with just over a minute left in the half. He got a rebound from a couple yards in front of the net with the goalie out of position, easily scoring to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Red Devils came out with some energy after the break, but their passes were frequently blocked by Bristol defenders.
However, Clisby got the Panthers back on the board. He got the ball from right inside the box and scored into the bottom-left corner to increase Bristol’s lead to 4-1 with 19:05 to play.
“I feel like we came out pretty good. Just finding a way to keep it more simple and creating more chances, and that’s what we talked about at halftime, try to create more chances,” Campbell head coach Dallan Patterson said. “We got some early, but none of them got to the net and we lost a little momentum.”
Bristol extended its lead with just under 13 minutes remaining. The Panthers had the ball inside the box, and after a blocked shot and a Campbell save, Weston got the ball toward the left side of the net and scored in the bottom-left corner, pushing the Panthers’ lead to 5-1.
Weston added another goal just over three minutes later when he scored on a free kick from just outside the box, completing the hat trick.
“Since I’ve been here, we’ve been a defensive team and we just score the goals,” Schrecengost said. “Defense came out a little slow in the second half, but they picked it up and got in the way as we went on.”
Bristol has won its last four games following Monday’s victory. They’ll take the pitch again to take on Badger for the second time this season on Friday in Kinsman.
The Panthers held on to beat the Braves 3-2 in the first meeting with their NAC rival.
“It’s a conference game, huge conference game. They’ll be ready,” Schrecengost said. “We beat them 3-2 the first time we played them. After that, we just need to keep winning games and work on the conference.”
