Liberty laps Campbell in Dom Prologo’s debut, 41-0

CAMPBELL — Thursday was the kickoff to the high school football season, and two new coaches led their teams on the field in Campbell.
Dom Prologo made his debut after taking over Liberty, and David Porch began his rookie season with Campbell. However, Prologo and the Leopards spoiled Porch’s first game as a varsity coach.
The Leopards won 41-0 in Prologo’s return to high school head coaching.
“Couldn’t have scripted it any better, and I’m glad our kids were playing hard and getting after the ball,” Prologo said.
It helps when a coach has the two-headed monster at running back of Dawaun Moody and Dyionn Tutwiler.
Moody ran for 96 yards and two touchdowns and caught two passes for 50 yards and a score. Tutwiler came in to relieve Moody at times, and he finished with 117 yards and two TDs on eight attempts.
“(Moody’s) pretty special. I call him ‘Sup’ because he’s our superstar,” Prologo said. “But he doesn’t act like it. He acts like a guy, he comes to work every day, and we got two of those dudes.”
The game couldn’t have started worse for the Red Devils.
Davon Perry scooped up the ball and returned it 5 yards for Liberty’s opening touchdown of the year with 11:06 left in the first quarter.
The Leopards (1-0) forced a three-and-out on Campbell’s next possession. Then Moody went to work.
The quarterback-turned-running back touched the ball six times on the Leopards’ seven-play series. He took a handoff out of the old Maryland I formation and ran up the middle for a 3-yard touchdown run to put Liberty up 13-0.
“I’ve played football my whole life,” Moody said. “I’ve played every position – quarterback, receiver, everything – so it comes naturally.”
After a turnover on downs by the Red Devils (0-1), the Leopards converted a fourth down with a 23-yard double reverse from Dyioon Tutwiler around the left side. That set up a 12-yard TD run from Moody when he broke a tackle in the backfield and cut back to the left side for the score, increasing Liberty’s lead to 20-0.
Freshman Ricky Fleetion relieved Thomas at quarterback, but he was intercepted by Jimmod Moore on his first varsity play.
With another possession, the Leopards went 58 yards on five plays, capping the drive with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Caiden Morgan to Moody just in front of the front-left pylon.
The Leopards took the 27-0 lead into the locker room.
Liberty got the running clock started when Tutwiler slipped out of a tackle and ran 34 yards for a touchdown, putting the Leopards ahead 34-0.
After a muffed return on the kickoff, Morgan closed the Liberty onslaught after he scored from 2 yards out on a QB sneak to make it 41-0.
Campbell lost three fumbles, threw an interception and gave up the ball on a turnover on downs. There were also a couple of personal fouls that gave Liberty momentum.
Porch said the game could be a building block for the season.
“When it rains, it pours,” Porch said. “I think we lost three kickoffs … it just kept happening over and over. And honestly, going back and watching this game, it was the little things happening. And when they happened, the kids put their heads down.
“We’re just encouraging them. Life goes on without football. There’s life lessons in football, and you become a better person.”
Despite the win, Prologo saw plenty that he wanted to clean up as well.
“I thought they did a great job of staying within the game, and they played well,” Prologo said. “I always say, and my head coach told me when I played, ‘The most physical team wins.’ And I think we were.”
