BOYS SOCCER

Cardinal Mooney 6, Gilmour Academy 3

Cardinal Mooney opened the season with a 6-3 victory over Gilmour Academy. Mihali Frangos led the Cardinals with two goals, while Jacob Gugliotta, Donovan Whetstone, Gavin Roley and Dimitri Zoumis each added a goal, as well. Zoumis and Angel Alvarez finished with two assists, in addition to one assist apiece from Frangos and Roley. Trewella had four saves in goal for Mooney.

GIRLS SOCCER

Cardinal Mooney 6, Boardman 0

Julia Diorio had a hat trick to lead Cardinal Mooney to a dominant 6-0 victory over Boardman to begin the season. Mia Williams, Francesca Cassese and Alexis Italiano each finished with a goal apiece for Mooney, while Leah Hudak contributed three assists and Cassese added an assist of her own. In goal, Sophia Dibo made four saves for the Cardinals.

Springfield 5, Columbiana 0

Behind four goals from Liv Zitkovic, Springfield opened the season with a 5-0 shutout victory over Columbiana. Rylie Wolfe added a goal for the Tigers, while Maddie Page had two assists and Kristina Vecchione had one. Ally Guerriero had four saves in net for Springfield and Kyle Hogan finished with eight saves for the Clippers.

Niles 13, Struthers 1

With an experienced returning roster, Niles opened the season by defeating Struthers 13-1. Kherington Stanford paced the Red Dragons with seven goals, while Taylor Bickerstaff had a hat trick, Maddie Yost had two and Emma Merlo had one. Yost led the team with four assists, as Merlo and Stanford each finished with three. Bickerstaff also contributed an assist. Faith Bionci had one save in goal for Niles. No Struthers stats were submitted.

Lakeview 3, Champion 2

In a season-opening rivalry match, Lakeview pulled out a close 3-2 victory over Champion. Sophie Irwin, Annabelle Humphrey and Claire Marble were the goal scorers for the Bulldogs. No Champion stats were submitted.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Ursuline 3, Brookfield 0

Ursuline cruised to a 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-13) victory over Brookfield as both teams opened the fall slate over the weekend. For the Warriors, Alexia Baker had 17 digs, Rylie Burdge had 18 assists, Maci Phillips had two blocks and Cassie Samios had four aces. Phillips and Samios each also finished with six kills, as MaRae Craig had five. No Ursuline stats were submitted.

South Range 2, Smithville 0

West Branch 2, South Range 0

The Raiders began the season by splitting a tri-match with Smithville and West Branch. South Range beat Smithville 2-0 (25-18, 25-21) and fell to the Warriors 2-0 (13-25, 23-25). Against Smithville, Anna Toy had six kills, 12 digs and three aces, while Parker Zwingler had eight assists and five digs and Lily Weaver finished with seven kills, three blocks and three aces. Against West Branch, Natalie Burnett had 10 assists and five digs, as Haylie John contributed 10 digs in the defeat. No West Branch stats were submitted.

Jackson-Milton 3,

Western Reserve 2

Jackson-Milton clawed back from two sets down to pull out a 3-2 (21-25, 26-28, 26-24, 25-20, 15-3) come-from-behind victory over Western Reserve to begin the season. For the Blue Devils, Ava Baker finished with 11 assists, five kills and 11 digs, while Chloeigh Endsley had 12 kills, six blocks and four aces and Angela DeSanto had 49 digs. No Jackson-Milton stats were submitted.

Struthers 2, Lowellville 0

LaBrae 2, Lowellville 0

The Wildcats split a tri-match to begin the season this weekend, falling to LaBrae 2-0 (16-25, 25-19) and defeating Lowellville 2-0 (25-18, 26-24). The Vikings then pulled out the sweep by also beating Lowellville 2-0 (25-11, 25-9). Against the Vikings, Struthers’ Gianna Martin had three kills and four points and Ashley Marcucci had seven points and two kills. Elliana Benson and Natalie Wolikow combined for seven assists, as Vivian Marker and Chloe Curd had 12 blocks together and Benson and Maddie Marshall each had four digs. LaBrae’s Shelby Bragg had 3 aces, 12 assists and two blocks, Riley Rowe had four kills and six assists and Leah DeArmitt had three aces and eight kills. In the win over the Rockets, Martin led Struthers with six kills and three blocks, Benson and Wolikow each had six assists and Trynyty Nail had 10 digs. Ella Kuszmaul had five kills and a block for LaBrae against Lowellville, while DeArmitt had seven kills and Rowe and Bragg combined for 24 assists. No Lowellville stats were submitted.

Canfield 3, Girard 0

In a meeting between two area volleyball powers, Canfield shut out Girard 3-0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-10) to begin the fall season. Ashtyn Hanousek was the Cardinals’ leading server with six aces, but she also had 11 kills. Paige Roberts had 12 kills and two blocks, while Viv Biro had 27 assists and Carly Fleming finished with 15 digs. No Girard stats were submitted.

Howland 2, Lakeview 0

Howland 2, Chagrin Falls 0

In a tri-match, Howland came away with a pair of 2-0 victories over Lakeview (25-14, 25-16) and Chagrin Falls (25-21, 25-20) to begin the season. Against the Bulldogs, Maya Kubancsek had 12 kills, two blocks and four aces, while Talia Rishel had 36 assists and Michelina Wayt had 11 digs and Lily Day had nine digs. Against Chagrin Falls, Kubancsek had 10 kills and two blocks, Rishel had 37 assists, Lily Day and Gabby Rich combined for 18 digs and Grace Kukkonen had seven kills.
