Changes coming to high school football coverage
The high school football season begins this week, and there will be a slight change to how The Vindicator and Tribune Chronicle will cover the sport this fall.
Over the course of the summer, the press deadline was pushed forward on Friday nights. Baseball fans might have noticed the lack of MLB boxes on the baseball page. This was a result of the earlier deadline.
This deadline will remain the same for the papers during the fall.
With the deadlines last year, The Vindicator and Tribune Chronicle received a number of high school football results after the print deadline, and the staff had difficulties finding a spot to run the late stats in other issues.
As a staff, it was decided that it will be better to split the high school football coverage across the weekend editions and Monday editions this fall.
Game stories from Friday night, as well as the scores from all local games, will run in the weekend editions. But the high school football boxes will be held and run in the Monday editions.
It was determined that this is the best move for all parties involved.
In addition to the earlier deadlines, a number of high school football programs in the area lack a dedicated scorekeeper. Last season, high school coaches from across the coverage area needed to review the tape themselves to calculate the stats from the previous game.
With the earlier deadline, the boxes will all run together instead of being sprinkled throughout the week and the coaches will have a window to make sure their stats are correct and submitted to the papers, alleviating stress on all groups and providing a better overall product.
To make sure the local content runs on Monday, the NFL page will be eliminated. The Browns and Steelers stories, their boxes and the NFL standings will run every Monday. However, there will not be boxes from additional NFL games unless there is additional room.
