Taylor North knocks off Canfield’s intermediate baseball team
The Canfield intermediate (50/70) baseball team’s run in the postseason came to a close on Tuesday.
Canfield fell 11-2 to Taylor North, Michigan, bringing an end to the local squad’s season in the Central Region tournament in Ankeny, Iowa.
While there were chances for Canfield to cut into the deficit, the big hit never came. Aidan Vasiliades led the team with three hits, and Gavin Janosko added two more.
Canfield (1-2) dropped its first game of the tournament, forcing it into a do-or-die situation early.
Canfield’s tournament began with an 18-0 loss to Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, which was still undefeated in the bracket going into play on Wednesday. The locals were held hitless during the contest.
However, Canfield rebounded in its second game as the bats came alive. Canfield beat Keystone, Nebraska, 17-7 to keep its seasons going.
Vasiliades earned the win after pitching 2 1/3 innings, and Robbie Komara added a scoreless 1 2/3 innings of work on the mound.
Janosko registered three hits, including an RBI single that triggered the mercy rule in the sixth inning. Calvin Zunic, Noah Oles and Rocco Turk each had two hits against Keystone.
Despite the loss, it was another successful tournament stretch for a Canfield Little League squad.
Canfield overcame a couple slow starts but eventually clinched the state championship on July 6 with a 19-13 extra-inning win over Ironton in Wheelersburg.
Prior to winning the state championship, Canfield beat Austintown 12-2 at its home field, McCune Park, to kick off its postseason run.
