Scrappers win on walk-off to cap historic night

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers played in front of the largest home crowd in franchise history Thursday as an announced crowd of 9,034 fans packed into Eastwood Field to see the Scrappers take on Frederick.

The standing-room-only crowd was the result of a free ticket giveaway sponsored by 7-17 Credit Union. The previous attendance record – also a 7-17 sponsored event a year ago – was 7,726.

The record number of fans were also treated to a free hot dog, a free soft drink and a post-game drone show.

The Scrappers also did their part, providing the fans with a thrilling 5-4 walkoff win over the Keys.

Even before the entire crowd was settled into their seats, Frederick scored the game’s first run in the top of the first inning. A one-out walk followed by a fielding error gave the Keys a quick 1-0 lead. A second walk set the Keys up for a potential big inning, but that runner was erased on an inning-ending double play.

Mahoning Valley took a 2-1 lead in the third. Max Johnson and Hayden Moore hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Johnson scored on a two-out Matt Rivera base hit. Moore scored on a bases-loaded walk.

In the top of the fifth, a Cam Pittman sacrifice fly tied the game at 2-2. The Keys then regained the lead in the sixth. A Cam Hassert bloop single plated the go-ahead run. A fielding error added the Keys’ fourth run.

The Scrappers inched closer in the seventh with a Rivera RBI base hit, cutting their deficit to 4-3. In two games with the Scrappers, Rivera now has 7 RBIs.

The Scrappers tied the game at 4-4 in the eighth. Seung-Jun Cha was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Dreylin Holmes ran for Cha and quickly stole second base. Holmes then advanced to third and scored on a pair of wild pitches.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth inning when Rivera coaxed a one-out walk. Rivera moved to second when Carson Hornung was hit by a pitch. Tommy Rover then laced a single to center field, scoring Rivera and giving the Scrappers their third straight win.

The Scrappers and Keys conclude their three-game series today at 7:05 p.m.

Starting at $3.23/week.
