Scrappers come back, beat Williamsport
On a night when the Mahoning Valley Scrappers changed their name to the Mahoning Valley Cookie Tables, the cookies crumbled right out of the gate at Eastwood Field.
However, that only set the table for a comeback, resulting in a 7-4 Mahoning Valley win over Williamsport Tuesday night at Eastwood Field.
Williamsport scored four runs in the first inning, but the Cookie Tables eventually fought back to lift their record to 14-12. The Crosscutters fall to 12-14.
The Crosscutters sent nine men to the plate in the first inning, scoring four runs. Leadoff hitter Carlos Castillo was hit by a pitch to open the game, and the Crosscutters were off and running. Joey Parliment plated the first run on a sacrifice fly. Michael Zarrillo doubled home a pair of runs. Amman Dewberry hit a bases-loaded, two-out single, scoring the fourth run. A runner was thrown out at home on the play to end the inning.
The Cookie Tables cut their deficit to one run in the third inning. Ben Martin walked to open the inning, then, one batter later, Max Johnson belted a two-run homer over the right-field wall. With one out, Max Hartman walked, and that again led to a run. Hartman stole second and third, then scored on a wild pitch.
The Cookie Tables tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth. Hartman reached on an infield single, then eventually came around to score on a Michal Sindelka groundout.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth. A pair of walks brought Ben Watson to plate with one out in the inning. Watson promptly belted a three-run home run over the centerfield wall, giving the Scrappers the 7-4 advantage.
The Scrappers and Crosscutters continue their three-game series today at 7:05 p.m.
