STRUTHERS — There’s something about the Struthers Field House that brings out the best in Austin Gibson.

Back in February, Gibson, who is trained by Keith Burnside of Burnside Athletic Club, scored a unanimous decision over Cleveland’s Tyler James at Paolone-N-Burnside’s Fight Night No. 5 amateur show at the Struthers Field House..

In Fight Night No. 6, also held at the Struthers Field House on Satuday night, Gibson defeated Pittsburgh’s Anthony Carlisano by split decision in the 147-pound main event to move to 15-6 in 21 amateur bouts.

In what was arguably the fight of the night, the matchup could have gone either way as both fighters went toe-to-toe with multiple punches landed by each fighter the entire nine minutes they spent in the ring.

Saving the best for last was the theme of the evening, as the co-main between Alliance’s Drew Mercer and Louisville’s Charlie Williams featured just as much action.

Behind on all five cards after the first two rounds, Mercer found a second wind in the third round and earned a well-deserved victory when the referee stopped the contest a minute and 33 seconds into the final round.

Six local fighters posted a 4-2 overall mark on the 12-bout card with Kavon Cotton, Karter Rudzik and Jaden Gonzales also scoring victories for the local contingent.

Rudzik, also of Burnside A.C., posted a unanimous decision over Logan Lowe of Louisville in a heavyweight pairing, while Cotton and Gonzales, each of whom is trained by Tom Cordell and Sam Calderon of Golden String Boxing, helped the latter gym to 2-1 mark on the night.

Cotton was a winner by unanimous decision over Xoren Radusewicz of Pittsburgh in a 132-pound matchup, while Gonzales led off the evening with a split-decision victory over Pittsburgh’s Nick Majors at 110 pounds.

Two locals falling just short were Lenox Gonzales of Golden String Boxing, who dropped a split decision to Damari Clark of Akron in a 65-pound scrap and Trent Corvino of Burnside A.C., who lost to Ashtabula’s King Derricoatte when the referee stopped their fight a minute and six seconds into the final round.

Two other fights were also stopped as Luca Province earned a victory over Ashtabula’s Mandrel Soto when their 147-pound matchup was halted a minute and eight seconds into the second round and in a 128-pound battle, Cleveland’s Rico Montes was victorious over Detroit’s Criag Burns after their bout ended just a minute and eight seconds into the opening round.

Other winners by unanimous decision included Louisville’s Ian Lilly over Julian Dolin of Cleveland at 138 pounds and Pittsburgh’s Dragan Radusewicz over Caleb Rivera of New York in a 175-pound pairing.

The final winner on the card was Devon Williams of Louisville, who earned a split-decision victory over Akron’s Dayson Mason at 135 pounds.
