Fitch track athlete Sahli to sign with YSU

AUSTINTOWN — Justin Sahli got some laps in with his Fitch track teammates during practice on Wednesday. The practice filled the void left after the Division I district track meet was postponed that afternoon.

It was a quiet moment before a memorable 48 hours for the senior.

Sahli will sign his letter of intent today with the Youngstown State track program. Then on Friday, he and the other Falcons will gear up for the rescheduled district meet as the postseason kicks off.

“It’s definitely a big burden off of me, just to be able to go out there, be able to race and not worry about what am I doing, where am I going to college? It’s a big relief, and it’s exciting,” Sahli said.

Sahli runs the mile, 800-meter run, the 4×400 relay and 4×800 relay. He ended the regular season ranked fourth in the state in the 800.

As a Penguin, he is expecting to run the 800 and a little bit in the 1,500 with potential appearances in the 400.

The proximity to home played a factor in his decision. Add in the Penguins’ success with distance runners, and it was a perfect fit for Sahli.

“(Fitch coach Seth Steiner) is friends with their coach — he went to YSU — and a lot of our training revolves around what he did in college,” Sahli said. “So I already have a baseline for what they do.”

Sahli found himself on the Penguins’ radar at the conclusion of the indoor track season. He placed second in the mile this winter and the connection formed.

The talks between Sahli and YSU started in early March. A week or two later, he took his visit.

“I met a lot of the team,” Sahli said. “The team aspect was great, the guys were very friendly. Everything was great, and I kinda made my decision there that that’s where I wanted to go.”

Sahli won’t be the only Falcon recognized today. He will be joined by teammate Meghan Vadas, who will also be honored as she announces her intent to continue her academic and track career at Westminster College in Pennsylvania.

Then the Falcons will take to their home track, looking to clinch a spot at regionals.

“Just keeping things light, get some good sleep tonight,” Sahli said. “The signing will be (today). We’ll have a nice, easy run tomorrow. Then Friday, I’m racing the 4×8, 800 and 4×4.

“It’s a quick turnaround, but you gotta adapt to the hand you’re dealt with. We’re really good at doing that. I’m not really worried about anything.”

Starting at $3.23/week.
