GIRLS BASKETBALL
Mineral Ridge 65, Springfield 60 — Mineral Ridge earned a key conference victory on Saturday with a 65-60 win over Springfield. Ava Hulett scored 21 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead the Rams, while Ava Carkido had 11 points and Sullivan Sandy scored 12 points in the victory. No Springfield stats were submitted.
Canfield 38, Boardman 31 — Canfield stayed unbeaten on the season with a tight, hard-fought 38-31 victory over AAC rival Boardman on Saturday. The Cardinals had a double-digit lead at halftime and held on in the second half against the Spartans. Carly Fleming paced Canfield with 13 points, while Sofia Castronova added 11 points. Ava Freeborough scored 13 for Boardman, while Sarah Bero had 12 points for the Spartans.
Ursuline 48, Cardinal Mooney 43 — In the Holy War, Ursuline held off archrival Cardinal Mooney 48-43 on Saturday thanks to 13 points from Kennedy Carpenter. Kenyah Gill added 11 points for the Irish. Samantha Rotunno scored 13 points to lead the Cardinals, while Julia Diorio had 10.
Salem 64, Alliance 14 — Salem cruised to a dominant 64-14 victory over conference foe Alliance on Saturday. The Quakers had 11 different players get on the scoresheet in the victory, led by 16 points from Reese Davidson-Chuck. Abby Knickerbocker also scored 11 points for Salem. Sauvyia Pleasant led the Aviators with eight points.
Hubbard 52, Badger 22 — The Eagles got back to .500 on the season with a 52-22 victory over the Braves on Saturday. Jillian Palumbo and Khamyah Howell led Hubbard in scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Claire Murphy also tallied nine points in the victory. E. O’Brien finished with seven points to lead Badger.
Struthers 43, Poland 39 — Despite trailing at the end of the third quarter, Struthers rallied to earn a 43-39 victory over Poland on Saturday. Three players scored in double figures to pace the Wildcats, including Katelyn Kimble (13 points), Ava Croyle (12 points) and Bella Sahli (11 points). Lucy Harrell scored 12 points for the Bulldogs and Cassie Blanch added 10, as Poland went 18-for-31 from the free-throw line.
Niles 63, Mathews 24 — Niles never looked back on Saturday, as the Red Dragons eased to a 63-24 victory over Mathews. Kherington Stanford had 16 points for Niles, while Ava Ferri and Maddie Yost each added 14. For the Mustangs, Mia DelGarbino and Marlee Ruiter each tallied nine points.
South Range 47, Mohawk (Pa.) 33 — No statistics submitted.
BOYS BASKETBALL
South Range 69, Springfield 38 — The Raiders dominated their rival Springfield 69-38 on Saturday behind 20 points from Luke Rohan. Graham Heikkinen also added 17 points to pace South Range. The Tigers were led by 16 points from Carson Cunningham in the loss.
LaBrae 65, Bristol 58 — A big first half spurred LaBrae to a 65-58 victory over Bristol on Saturday. The Vikings held a 14-point lead over the Panthers at halftime and held on late, despite a late rally in the fourth quarter by Bristol. A. Rowe led LaBrae with 18 points, while D. Wilson had 15 and O. Boone had 14. Kaiden Kohler paced Bristol with 17 points, while Jack Berry finished with 10.
Canfield 50, West Branch 41 — Canfield pulled ahead of West Branch in the third quarter and went on to stay ahead for a 50-41 victory on Saturday. Drew Shapiro hit three 3-pointers to lead Canfield with 14 points, while Ben Weaver and Nick Lavanty each scored 10. Cooper Anderson scored 13 points for the Warriors to go with 12 from Camden Lane.
Mathews 70, Struthers 66, 2OT — Mathews and Struthers played an instant classic on Saturday, with the Mustangs edging out the Wildcats 70-66 in a double overtime thriller. Dom Toto scored his 1,000th career point and led Mathews with 20 points. Logan Linkesh added 17, while Caden Brubaker scored 11. For Struthers, J. Shaffer paced the Wildcats with a game-high 25 points to go along with 14 points from T. Cole.
Brookfield 68, West Middlesex (Pa.) 47 — Cody Davidson and Blake Hammond combined for 40 points to lead Brookfield to a 68-47 victory over West Middlesex (Pa.) on Saturday. Davidson scored 19, while Hammond added 21. Teagan Barbe also scored in double figures for the Warriors with 12 points. Roman Golub had 15 points to lead the Big Reds, while John Partridge scored 11.
Austintown Fitch 50, Hickory (Pa.) 44 — Austintown Fitch bounced back from a defeat Friday night with a 50-44 victory over Hickory (Pa.) on Saturday. Carter Owens had another big showing for the Falcons with 17 points, while Marcel Finkley scored 13 points. Trevor Borowicz was Hickory’s lone scorer in double figures with 12 points.
Warren G. Harding 64, Garfield Heights Trinity 52 — The Raiders continued their strong start to the new year with a 64-52 victory over Trinity in a neutral site game at Cleveland Heights on Saturday. Chaz Coleman scored 22 points to go along with 20 points from Myles Miller. Davion Herron also chipped in 15 points in the victory. J. Campbell led Trinity with 18 points.
Howland 63, Girard 54 — Howland won its seventh game of the season with a 63-54 victory over Girard on Saturday. After a tight first quarter, the Tigers broke things open in the second quarter and held on despite a late rally in the fourth quarter by the Indians. Anthony Chieffo and Darren Douglas led Howland with 17 and 15 points, respectively. Dom Phillips had a game-high 23 points for the Indians to go with 11 from Dom Tolone.
Liberty 43, Niles 41 — Liberty pulled out a tight 43-41 victory over Niles on Saturday. Ameer Haynes led the Leopards with 17 points, while Evan Bates pitched in 13 points in the victory. Isaiah Redd had 14 points for the Red Dragons to go along with 10 points from Avon Fryer.
Champion 50, Maplewood 45 — Champion’s Damien Wickham knocked down a pair of late free throws to ice a 50-45 victory over Maplewood on Saturday. Wickham finished with 18 points for the Golden Flashes, which was also a career-high. Braylon Braham also scored 13 points, while Christian Williams added 12 for Champion. Ethan Nevinski led the Rockets with 16 points in the loss.
BOYS WRESTLING
Howland placed fourth out of 15 teams at the Tool City tournament on Saturday, as nine wrestlers earned podium finishes. Brayden Cortese (107 lbs) and Deacon Mock (139 lbs) each had first-place finishes, while Aidan O’Donnell (133 lbs), Chris Mijavec (189 lbs) and Owen Dreher (215 lbs) each got second place in their respective weight classes. Patrick Neff (127 lbs) had a fourth-place finish, Eddie Morrison (145 lbs) had a fifth-place finish and Aidan Whittenberger (172 lbs) and Noah Swope (285 lbs) each earned eighth-place finishes.
