Holiday boxing matches kick off with ‘Thanksgiving Feast’

YOUNGSTOWN — For the past 34 years, Jack Loew’s South Side Boxing Club has either hosted an amateur, professional or pro-am show which has traditionally kicked off the holiday season for area boxing fans.

This year’s 12 bout, all-amateur ‘Thanksgiving Feast’ card is set for this Saturday at Penguin City Brewery, 460 E. Federal Street, Youngstown and will feature a local boxer in nearly every pairing with Loew’s gym, Burnside A.C., Tom Cordell and Sam Calderon’s Golden String Boxing Club Zulu Boxing Gym out of Warren all well-represented.

“We have two co-features with a bevy of local talent set for display in most every fight,” Loew said. “The bouts are evenly matched, competitive and I cannot wait to see which fight will be deemed the fight of the night.”

Keith Burnside, Jr., whose father, Keith, Sr. is the highly-respected trainer of Burnside A.C., is one of the co-main features as he goes up against Kris Benjamin, a hard-hitting, experienced puncher in a 150-pound scrap.

The other co-main will pit Cardinal Mooney freshman Chris Vass of SSBC as he takes on Maddox Smith, also of Pittsburgh, in a 132-pound pairing.

“Keith Burnside will have his hands full with Kris Benjamin because both have risen through the ranks and are looking to take the next step in their fight careers,” Loew said. “Chris Vass is just chomping at the bit to show what he can do. He is coming off his freshman football season at Cardinal Mooney High School and is an extremely popular, young boxer. He has a huge following due to his come-forward approach, while both local boxers are extremely exciting to watch because of their respective styles in the ring.”

In addition to Burnside and Vass, other locals featured on the card include 14-year-old Omari Garner (SSBC,115 pounds), 16-year-old Isaiah Christian (SSBC, 140 pounds), Will Perez (Golden String, 145 pounds, Mallick Bennett (95 pounds, Zulu B.C.), Dontrail Burkes (SSBC, 115 pounds), Shaleek Cook (SSBC, 160 pounds), Youseff Hajjawi (Golden String, 160 pounds), Kingsley Wade (SSBC, 70 pounds) and Austin Gibson (Burnside A.C., 141 pounds).

Boxers from Akron, Cleveland and Pittsburgh, and a team hailing from Massachusetts are also represented on the card.

All winners will receive a championship belt for their efforts.
