Ursuline hand Cardinal Mooney a Holy War loss

YOUNGSTOWN – Youngstown rivals squared off when Ursuline and Cardinal Mooney took to the gridiron at Youngstown State University on Friday.

The Irish (9-1) won their ninth consecutive game by dismantling the Cardinals 30-0.

“Anytime you can pitch a shutout against your rival, it’s something special,” Ursuline coach Dan Reardon said. “DC (Ferrell) made a couple of big plays for us on offense, and we’re onto the playoffs.”

Ferrell got the scoring started when he exploded for a 70-yard touchdown run. The Irish failed on a two-point conversion and it was 6-0.

Ursuline added three points after Ferrell dropped one right in there to fellow senior Joe Balog from 45 yards away. Balog hauled in the pass over his shoulder and down the sideline, setting up senior Anthony Tabak for a 31-yard field goal attempt. Tabak converted and it was 9-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Cardinals (3-7) were on the move, to begin the second quarter, after sophomore quarterback Vincent Gentile completed a pass to pick up a fourth down and 3. However, Ursuline sophomore Amire Brown intercepted a pass two plays later to end the drive.

Both defenses controlled the second quarter, and AJ Snyder made multiple tackles for the Irish.

Then, Ursuline made it 16-0 at halftime when sophomore Ray Javey dove into the end zone to snag a 22-touchdown catch from Ferrell just before the break.

Senior John Frangos intercepted a pass to begin the second half for Ursuline. Ferrell scored on a 8-yard quarterback keeper, and it was 23-0.

The Irish recovered an onside kick, but the Mooney defense held as the offensive output came to a standstill in the third quarter.

Ursuline made it 30-0, early in the fourth quarter, after Balog picked up a first down on a fourth down and 2 with a fake punt. Junior Devonte Taylor capped off the scoring with a 21-yard touchdown catch over the middle.

Junior Luke Kollar made one last big play with an interception and a long return for Ursuline.
