Area teams, golfers, punch tickets to state

By the middle of the afternoon on Tuesday, several area high school boys golf teams punched their tickets to the state championships.
Warren JFK, Cardinal Mooney and Badger all made it from the Division III district tournament in Tannenhaulf Golf Course, and Poland advanced at the Division II outing at Windmill Lakes.
The Eagles took the top spot with a combined score of 312, Mooney was the runner-up with 321 and Badger was the final team qualifier by finishing third with 335.
Poland qualified since the Bulldogs finished as the runner-up behind Chagrin Falls, who won the district event with a team score of 305. The Bulldogs shot 312, and Bay was the final team qualifier with 318.
The junior class drove the Eagles to the win, with all official scores coming via the third-years. Andrew Fredenburg led the way with a 74, Henry Phillips was right behind with a 75, Julian Bolino had an 81 and Andrew Lapolla was fourth with an 82.
Mooney junior Alex Eckstein had the best day on the course, finishing with a 69 to lead the field. Classmate Dante Turner carded a 78, Elias Lyras pitched in an 86 and Tyler Guerrieri rounded out the Cardinals’ scores with an 88.
Austin Mariani led Badger’s push to the state round with a 76. Ian Tricker finished his day with a 77, Tyler McWilliams tallied an 88 and Brody Shay was the Braves’ final score with a 94.
A trio of sophomores led the way for the Bulldogs. Matthew Morrone had the best day for Poland, shooting a 72. Angelo Rinaldi was right behind with a 73, and classmate Ryan Lombardo shot an 80. AJ Battagalia was the final official score with an 87.
Lakeview’s Jason Demonica won a one-hole playoff with a birdie, securing a spot as the only local individual to advance. Demonica was tied for sixth with a 75.
OTHER LOCAL PERFORMANCES
At the Division II tournament at Windmill Lakes, the Ursuline Fighting Irish were just on the outside looking in as they finished fourth with 320. South Range (323) was fifth, West Branch (329) took eighth and Hubbard (332) was 10th.
Jackson-Milton finished seventh in the Division III tournament with a 352. Lowellville took eighth on Tuesday with a 355 and Columbiana was ninth after combining for 362.
There were a number of individual golfers that competed as well.
Bristol’s Diesel Williams tied with Turner for seventh with a 78. Braydon Demaria had an 80 for Brookfield, Springfield’s Jackson Ensley shot 81, Mineral Ridge’s AJ Sandy shot 85 and Newton Falls’ Cameron Huff had an 89.
STATE CHAMPIONSHIP INFO
The Division III boys state championship will take place on Oct. 11-12 at NorthStar Golf Club in Sunbury. The Division II championship rounds will start Oct. 13-14 at Firestone Country Club in Akron.
