Words on Wheels: Lou Blaney Memorial
This Saturday, Sept. 21 will be the rescheduled 16th annual Lou Blaney Memorial one of the biggest races of the 95th season.
Lou Blaney was fan favorite and a racing legend having won over 600 feature races and 7 championships. Inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, Eastern Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame, Northeast Dirt Modified Hall of Fame, Pittsburg Circle Track Hall of Fame, Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame, Twin State Auto Racing Club Hall of Fame, Sharon Speedway Hall of Fame, Lernerville and Tri-City Hall of Fame.
He was the Cavalcade of Champions Big Block regional champion 16 times and the Cavalcade of Champions Sprint car champion four times. Son Dave Blaney was a World of Outlaw champion and NASCAR driver. Son Dale was an All Star Circuit of Champions title holder 6 times. Grandson Ryan is a NASCAR champion. So talented and exciting to watch. If he so choose he could have competed in and racing series and been successful but stayed home to take care of the family business Blaney Lumber and the family.
Saturday’s race will pay $12,000 to win and $1,200 to start for the Sprint cars. In addition, Sharon will host the BRP Modified tour paying $2,500 to win. Both Dave and Dale Blaney racing with the sprints having both won the race previously and Dave being the only two time winner. It will be a great night of racing for all and honoring a racing legend.
Closing out the 95th year of racing will be the week following on Saturday, Sept. 28 when the World of Outlaws ride into town. Don’t lock up the wife and kids bring them to see the “Greatest show on dirt” The traveling series has some of the greatest Sprint car drivers in the country battling on one of the best dirt tracks in the country. As the area racing season comes to a close its closing with a bang. Two stellar Sprint car shows back to back. Put some dirt in your diet and come out and see the most powerful and exciting dirt cars right in your own back yard.
