Two locals to be inducted into Toledo Hall of Fame
A pair of area standouts will be added to the University of Toledo Hall of Fame.
Boardman’s Joe Conroy and Chaney alumnus Ron Warga will be a part of the Rockets’ 2024 Hall of Fame class. The induction banquet is scheduled for Oct. 25, and the inductees will be honored during Toledo’s football game against Bowling Green on Oct. 26.
Conroy was a tackling machine while playing for the Rockets from 1974-78. His 490 stops ranks second all-time in program history and his 39 tackles for loss are sixth
As a senior team captain, the Boardman graduate was named first-team All-Mid American Conference. Conroy made 105 tackles as a freshman in 1974, earning the Norman Cohen Award as the team’s best freshman. An injury sidelined Conroy in his second year, but he bounced back with 126 tackles and nine tackles for loss in 1977. He finished his career with a 133-tackle, 16-tackle for loss season in 1978.
Conroy was also a member of the Toledo men’s volleyball team and spent some time as a professional beach volleyball player after graduation.
After his playing days, he became the strength and conditioning and assistant coach for the Youngstown State volleyball team. He later led the Penguins as the head coach from 1992-2004. He was named Mid-Continental Conference Coach of the Year in 1994, 1995, 1998 and 1999.
He retired from coaching in 2004, but he continued working at YSU as the Coordinator of Facilities and Programs. He retired from the university in 2019.
Warga played baseball for the Rockets rom 1996-99, starting all four years as a middle infielder.
The former Chaney Cowboy hit .300 with a .394 on-base percentage, nine home runs, a program-record 17 triples, 32 doubles, 107 walks, 104 RBIs, 156 runs scored and 65 stolen bases.
By the time he left Toledo, he was the career leader in runs scored, hits (212), triples and walks. He was second with 315 career total bases, and eighth in RBIs and doubles. He still ranks in the top five in MAC history in triples.
Warga was a team captain as a senior in 1999. The Rockets set a program record with 39 wins and 23 conference wins that season. Warga contributed with a .314 batting average, four home runs and 34 RBIs. He set the school’s single-season record with 26 steals, 57 runs scored and five triples.
He started every game as a freshman in 1996, leading the team in at-bats, walks, steals and triples. The early success landed him on the MAC All-Tournament team. As a junior, Warga hit .312 with three home runs, four triples, 14 doubles and 35 runs scored.
Following his graduation, Warga signed as a free agent with the Canton Crocodiles of the Frontier League. It was his only season of independent ball.
