Scrappers pull out third straight win, beating Spikes 7-6
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers won their third straight game thanks to a four-run top of the seventh inning on Thursday night.
The Scrappers pulled out a 7-6 win over the State College Spikes in the Keystone State.
T.J. McKenzie got things going for the Scrappers in the seventh with a one-out walk. Dreylin Holmes doubled in McKenzie, Kota Suzuki singled in Holmes, Chang-Yong Lee’s grounder singled in Suzuki and Drew Holderbach singled in Cooper Hext.
Holmes had a strong 3-for-5 day with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Scrappers. He got things going early with a solo home run in the top of the first inning.
Preston Knox took a payoff, two-out pitch for a ball to force home a run and tie the game in the home half of the first.
The Scrappers retook the lead when Drey Dirksen sent a solo homer over the wall in left field. However, the Spikes responded in the bottom of the second when Austin Roccaforte drew a two-out walk. He scored on a triple by Hext, tying the game at 2.
Austin Baal drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the third inning, and Cameron Bufford singled in the next at-bat. Knox put the Spikes in front 4-2 with a two-run triple in the bottom of the third. Knox added a third run in the inning when he scored on a passed ball by Dirksen.
Zach Ketterman’s RBI single to center scored Lee for a Mahoning Valley insurance run in the top of the ninth. Knox singled in Bufford to cap a solid day by the St. Louis product, but it wasn’t enough. Derksen threw out Knox to end the game as he tried to swipe second base.
Jonathan Rodriguez improved to 2-0 after pitching three innings of hitless relief for the Scrappers. Rodriguez allowed one walk and punched out one after taking over for starter Joey Butz.
