Raiders take down Quakers
GREENFORD – The Salem and South Range High Schools are less than 10 miles apart, however, on Friday night the two programs met for the first time on the gridiron. The Raiders made the most of the new relationship with a solid 35-0 victory over the Quakers.
Much like last week in the Raiders opener, they utilized a balanced attack of running the ball and picking up big chunks of yards through the air to improve to 2-0 on the season. Raiders running back Aiden Dominguez rushed for 78 yards and 1 TD while quarterback Tristan Toy rushed for 74 yards and 2 TDs along with passing for 102 yards and another 1 TD.
However, perhaps even more important was the Raider’s ability to avoid a potential momentum swing early in the second quarter. With the Raiders leading 7-0 Dominguez took a handoff off left tackle and blasted forward before the ball was punched out of his hands from behind. Fortunately for the Raiders, senior halfback Troy Combs scooped up the ball and advanced it another 12 yards before being tackled.
The Quakers were held to 129 yards of total offense in the contest, only 48 yards in the second half. For the Quakers, the loss sets them back 0-2 in the early season.
The Raiders scored on their opening possession on a 15-yard pass from Toy to receiver Gaven Nagy to make it 7-0. Toy would score on a 4-yard run following that recovered fumble from 4 yards out to make 14-0 in favor of the Raiders at the 9:37 mark of the second quarter.
They would essentially seal the victory on the combination of their last drive of the first half and the first of the second half by scoring on both possessions. Toy scored his second touchdown of the night with just 22 seconds remaining before halftime. Then Dominguez added a 5-yard jaunt at the 2:30 mark of the third quarter to make it 28-0. The Raiders added a 20-yard run by Dylan Smesko with 11 seconds remaining in the third frame to start the running clock with the Raiders leading 35-0.
The Raiders will look to continue their early season momentum next Friday when they host Division II opponent, the Barberton Magics. The Quakers will look to get things back on track next Friday when they host Columbiana County rivals in the East Liverpool Potters.
