Jack Loew to host ‘Outside the Nest’ 12-bout fight event

YOUNGSTOWN — Local trainer Jack Loew and his South Side Boxing Club will host a 12-bout, amateur fight card this Saturday at Penguin City Brewery, 460 Federal Street, Youngstown.

The event, titled “Outside the Nest,” will feature six boxers hailing from Loew’s SSBC while 12 total locals are set to take part.

The main event will pit Danny Bodish of the Keystone State against Daben Figueroa of Akron in a 130-pound pairing.

“Every fight is evenly matched with a great overall card that took a lot of work to put together and is ready to be unveiled,” Loew said. “The main event between Danny [Bodish] and Daben [Figueroa] features two veteran fighters, Bodish with over 80 fights to his credit and Figueroa with just over 40 scraps so they will undoubtedly provide the audience with three rounds of action-packed, toe-to-toe action.”

The two mains are equally as appealing with Andre Alveretta of Salem Boxing Club taking on Willie Hardy of Cleveland in a 170-pound match-up while Chris Vass of SSBS is set to entertain Erie’s Isaiah Tolley in a 130-pound pairing.

“Chris Vass is an eighth-grade football player at St. Charles who will be a freshman at Cardinal Mooney High School in the fall while Isaiah Tolley is also an eighth-grader who plays football in Erie, Pennsylvania,” Loew added. “Chris has one of the strongest work ethics I have ever witnessed during my time as a trainer while Tolley knows what it takes to train for a match. It is the first fight for both boxers so it should be interesting, to say the least.

“Andre [Alveretta] is trained by Rocky DeFrank and is currently ranked No. 5 nationally while Willie [Hardy] is ranked #10 nationally at 165 pounds. Both fighters are chomping at the bit, just counting down the hours until they can march into the ring to showcase their talents.”

Other Loew-trained boxers on the card include James LaClair (60 pounds), Kingsley Wade (65 pounds), Omari Garner (100 pounds), Vic Velazquez (140 pounds) and John Michaels (170 pounds).

The other locals include Keith Burnside and Austin Gibson, both 145-pound hopefuls who hail from Struthers, Alveretta from Salem B.C., and Darrius Harshaw (170 pounds), John Davis (140 pounds) and Isaac Johnson (145 pounds), all of whom hail from the Youngstown area.

Rounding out the Ohio portion of the card will be Jonah Hoffner (140 pounds), Figueroa and Izayah Jones (100 pounds) from Akron, Richard Spriggs (100 pounds) and Carlo DiFrangia (90 pounds) of Columbus, and Cleveland hopefuls Paul Butler (65 pounds), Lorenzo Locklear (100 pounds), Luciano Locklear (101 pounds), Khalil Osaze (145 pounds), Jayden Thompson (125 pounds), Mike Colvin (101 pounds), Austin White (60 pounds) and Hardy.

Representing Pennsylvania will be Luke Sorott (125 pounds), Ace Aikens (75 pounds), Tolley, Damar Fremming (90 pounds) and Jameele Williams (140 pounds), all from Erie with Aemon Evans (75 pounds) and Bodish the remaining fighters from Ohio’s neighboring state also on the docket.

General Admission is $20 and further information can be obtained by calling 330-501-5713.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with the first fight hitting the bell at 7 p.m.
