LaBrae pulls away late for win against Windham

LEAVITTSBURG — After a long holiday break, Windham and LaBrae got back to work on the hardwood in Leavittsburg on Tuesday.

The Vikings (8-1) built an early lead, in a game that had been rescheduled, and pulled away from the Bombers for a 52-32 victory.

“This date worked for both of us,” LaBrae coach Mandy Rowe said. “We were happy to get it in. We haven’t had a game since before Christmas. I’m glad we were able to come out and play hard. We did a good job, offensively, moving the ball around. There were moments where we executed and others that were sloppy.”

Mariah Jones connected on a finger-roll for LaBrae, but Windham senior Briah Daniel, who finished with a game-high 22 points, had a steal and took it all the way for the finish.

“We still need to work on our defense,” Rowe said. “Briah Daniel had a really nice game. Mariah Woods was able to dribble through our press. We have to work on cutting the drive off a little better.”

Lorena DeOliviera grabbed a rebound and scored underneath for Windham, but Ella Kuszmaul, who scored a team-high 18 points for the Vikings, swished a three-pointer from the corner and LaBrae led 14-6 after one quarter.

Riley Rowe made a good move to the basket. Angel Scruggs canned a nice shot, and Mia Sloan drilled one from downtown as the Vikings took a 30-16 lead into halftime.

Kuszmaul hooked up with Marissa Levensky (12 points) with an assist on a fast break to start the third quarter.

“I’m glad we’re back playing,” Levensky said. “It was nice to get this game rescheduled. We played together as a team. I can’t wait to see how we can improve in the second half of the season.”

Woods had a steal and a layup for the Bombers. However, Kuszmaul made a spectacular shot as the buzzer sounded, and LaBrae built a 42-26 advantage heading to the fourth.

“It was a little rough in the second half,” Kuszmaul said. “But, we were able to pull through. We let Windham back in the game. We had to turn up our defense and work hard together to get the win.”

Daniel kept scoring and the Bombers (4-3) had a chance to cut the deficit to 10 points early in the fourth.

“Briah Daniel is a special kid on and off the basketball court,” Windham coach Jimie Collins said. “She’s matured into a very good player. She’s willing to do anything to help the team. Mariah Woods is her running mate. They understand the game. They play it the right way. This was a minor setback. We’re looking to hang a league banner in our gym this year.”

Later in the fourth quarter, Kuszmaul and Levensky stole the ball and scored, and senior Eva Prejsnar had a layup as the Vikings got the win.

“We’ve been off for a while,” Collins said. “It’s nice to get our legs back into basketball mode. But, we were gassed at the end of the game. We turned the ball over too much. We stayed in the battle, but we didn’t have anything left to finish.”

The Vikings could be looking to hang a banner as well this year, but there’s still a month and a half left in the regular season and anything can happen.
