Dynes, Bates ‘day-to-day’ for YSU; Reid ‘ready’ to go vs. IUPUI
YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State men’s basketball coach Jerrod Calhoun provided updates on recent injuries to three players during Tuesday’s weekly press conference.
Calhoun said 7-foot-3 freshman center Gabe Dynes is day-to-day with a small hand fracture that will not require surgery.
Senior forward Jaylen Bates is also day-to-day with a sprained ankle. Calhoun said Dynes and Bates will probably both be out for the Penguins’ game at IUPUI on Thursday.
Also, after leaving Saturday’s win against Detroit Mercy early, fifth-year forward Ziggy Reid practiced on Monday and should be “ready” to go Thursday against the Jaguars.
Reid leads the team in scoring at 13.9 points per game, while Bates is averaging 4.2 points per game for YSU.
Dynes sustained his injury going for a block during the Penguins’ loss at Oakland last week.
Dynes is averaging 4.4 points per game in about 13 minutes per game this season. He set a career-high with six blocks against Wright State, becoming the first YSU player with at least six blocks in a game since 2018. Against Oakland, he broke the school record for blocks in a season by a freshman.
The Penguins travel to face IUPUI on Thursday at 7 p.m., before returning home to face Northern Kentucky on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
