Jack Loew to host holiday fight night

16-bout fight card to be held Saturday at Penguin City Brewery

YOUNGSTOWN — Local trainer Jack Loew and his South Side Boxing Club will host their annual “Season’s Beatings” fight card, a 16-bout amateur boxing show set for this Saturday at Penguin City Brewery in downtown Youngstown.

The annual event features local favorite and SSBC member Tony Scandy taking on Ed Boehler of Pittsburgh in the master’s super heavyweight main event, with up and coming local pugilist Keith Burnside set to meet Isaac Johnson, of Youngstown, in the 140-pound co-main feature.

“The main event between Tony [Scandy] and Ed Boehler is shaping up to be an exciting, winner-take-all fight,” Loew said. “Tony has proven repeatedly that he will go up against anyone, anytime, while Boehler is a veteran of 83 amateur fights. Keith [Burnside] and Isaac [Johnson] are both up and coming local kids who are fighting for pride. This could very easily be the fight of the night.”

The card features seven boxers from Loew’s SSBC gym, two from United Boxing Club, Burnside Boxing and 16 fighters with local ties, while boxers from Akron, Ashtabula, Cleveland, Erie (Pa.), Lorain (Mass.) and Pittsburgh round out the card.

Loew-trained fighters include Isaiah Christian (135 pounds), Dontrail Burkes (102), Kingsley Wade (70) Colin Enright (135), Levi Williams (195), Omari Garner (95) and Scandy. Burnside is trained by his father, Keith, Deshawn Johnson (145) and Miguire Downing (147) represent United B.C. while others on the card with local ties include, Will Perez (147), Julio Azpuria (145), Johnson, Kavon Cotton (135) and John Davis 135).

Garner will go up against Emilio Estevez of Erie’s Bazzaro Boxing Club in a 95-pound scrap, while Williams is set and ready to take on Andy Lee, also from Erie, in a 195-pound pairing.

“Omari continues to improve all the time and I am always excited when this kid enters the ring,” Loew said. “Another up and comer is Levi Williams, who will entertain Andy Lee in a 195-pound match-up. Both Omari and Levi have been training hard, (and) cannot wait for Saturday to get into the ring, with 2024 promising to be a big year for both fighters.”

General Admission is $25, ringside seats are $50, with a table of eight going for $400.
