Penguins’ streak snapped on road at PFW

The Youngstown State women’s basketball team had its four-game win streak come to an end Thursday with a two-point loss to Purdue Fort Wayne, 67-65.

PFW’s Shayla Sellers made the game-winning layup with 22 seconds left to push the Mastodons (10-13, 7-6 Horizon League) past the Penguins. Youngstown State (16-6, 10-3 Horizon League) had a chance to answer in the waning moments but it came up short.

After trailing by four points at the end of the first quarter, the Penguins outscored PFW by nine points in the second frame to take a five-point lead into halftime. But, the Mastodons answered in the second half, outscoring YSU by two points in the third and five points in the fourth to seal the win.

Youngstown State’s Megan Callahan scored a game-high 23 points in the loss while Lilly Ritz and Paige Shy both added 12 and Malia Magestro tallied 10. Ritz also tacked on 12 rebounds for the double-double.

Sellers led Purdue Fort Wayne with 19 points and Jazzlyn Linbo scored 14 and tallied four rebounds and three blocks. Amelia Bromenschenkel scored 10 as well for Purdue Fort Wayne.

Youngstown State continues its road trip on Saturday with a matchup against Cleveland State.
