KINSMAN — It was the Duncan Moy show when the Badger Braves faced the Bristol Panthers on Tuesday.
The junior, who transferred from Warren G. Harding ahead of this season, led his team with 34 points as Badger picked up a key conference win over Bristol 73-59.
“After the game, I told my coaching staff ‘It’s nice to have number five with us,'” Upshire said. “The things he does with a basketball are unbelievable. The layup that he made from behind the backboard and spun it in somehow, I looked at the coaches and said ‘Oh my goodness.’ The things he can do with a basketball are tremendous, especially for as small of a school as we are. We saw it with the crowd tonight, they come and they like that stuff.”
Moy found his rhythm early in the game and never looked back. He hit a confidence-building three-point shot to start the Braves’ scoring and would finish the first quarter with a team-high 13 points. He was effective on every offensive level, shooting threes, creating space for midrange jump shots, and hitting acrobatic layups while surrounded by Panthers defenders.
The Panthers did not enjoy trying to defend Moy. No matter what defensive strategy they tried, they could not stop the Braves’ junior from scoring. Bristol head coach Craig Giesy thought his team could have prepared better to stop Moy.
“He’s obviously a very good player,” Giesy said. “We discuss game plan and this and that, but we just didn’t execute very well and that’s on me. As a coach, I’ve got to do a better job getting us prepared, but Moy did a great job tonight.”
Moy got into foul trouble in the first half as he picked up his third foul and was subbed out for the remainder of the first half with his team leading 27-25 at the time.
With their leading scorer on the bench, Badger shifted playmaking responsibilities to senior guard Bradley Hamilton and the Braves went into halftime leading 32-27.
Hamilton finished the game with 16 points. Upshire is confident in all of his players’ abilities to score.
“We played a game earlier this year where a team went box-and-one on us,” Upshire said. “I told our guys at halftime that what people don’t realize is that we have five guys who can score at any time on the floor. Duncan is phenomenal at what he does but we also have Hamilton who is a four-year starter for us. We have freshmen that have been phenomenal for us, then we have Cole Burnett in the middle who is big for us.”
Burnett, a senior for Badger, was quiet offensively as he only scored two points but he finished the game with three blocks on defense.
“He’s deflected a bunch of shots this year,” Upshire said. “He’s averaging 4.5 blocks for us…He takes up space in the paint, he rebounds the basketball, he does a phenomenal job for us.”
Bristol junior Mikey Burbach had a strong game as he led his team with 25 points. Burbach’s intensity kept the Panthers alive in the second half.
While Bristol was ultimately not able to pull off a comeback, Giesy emphasized the importance of Burbach for his team.
“Mikey is a three-year guy that we rely on,” Giesy said. “We’re asking a lot from him as guys are getting experience while we try to figure this out. I thought he played well today, I thought he tried to be aggressive, and he rebounded well. Through six games he’s been as solid as we can ask of him.”
With the victory, the Braves continue their undefeated season with an overall record of 5-0. With the loss, Bristol’s overall record falls to 4-2.
