MCDONALD — After another a 33-0 shutout victory over McDonald on Friday, one that moves the Valley Christian Eagles to an undefeated record of 3-0, Valley Chrisitan coach Andy Hake had a message for his team.
“Be happy you’re on a team that’s 3-0,” Hake shouted to his players.
The Eagles have now outscored their opponents by a combined total of 120-19 this season.
“That’s a lot of points to not a lot of points,” Hake told his team.
The Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead, and were driving again but McDonald senior Nolan Agler intercepted the ball on the 3-yard line.
The Devils put together a good drive on the ground, but when they tried going to the air Tyree Washington picked it off and raced 70 yards for a touchdown and a 13-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
Michael Woloschak had a big kickoff return for McDonald, but the Devils (1-2) were forced to punt.
The McDonald defense forced a turnover on downs and the offense looked to put points on the board before halftime. Quarterback Nathan Sierra (4 of 12 passing for 38 yards) hit Danny Gray over the middle. Gray made a juggling catch and the Devils were on the move. McDonald got down to the 14-yard line, but Phillip Spradley intercepted a pass in the end zone with 1 second remaining before the break.
“The kids played hard in the first half,” McDonald coach Dan Williams said. “The interception return hurt. If we can get out of that half down 7-0, it could’ve been a whole different ballgame.
“We’ve gotta throw the ball where either we can catch it or no one can catch it before the half.
“We gave up too many big plays. Our goal was to not give up the explosion plays. Give them credit. They’re a good football team. We battled, but they had more athletes than we did.”
The Eagles scored on the first possession of the second half, and scored again when they returned a McDonald fumble for a touchdown and it was quickly 25-0.
“This is our home away from home,” Hake said. “McDonald is one of the most traditional teams in Trumbull county. They have a great history and coaching staff.
“Our kids came ready to play today. We were able to make some plays, and we have some guys that are special players.”
One of those players is 6′ 4″ 235 lbs senior Jon’trell Mixon, who made a spectacular, over the shoulder catch at tight end and flattened the Devils from his defensive end position.
“We played as a team,” Mixon said. “We secured the W, and there’s many more to come. I believe that we have the talent and enthusiasm to keep this going.”
Mixon’s quarterback Jhordan Peete was 9 of 16 passing for 156 yards. Ja’sean Lindsey had 10 carries for 128 yards and Veshun Gurley had 6 catches for 67 yards.
“These players are really good,” Hake said. “They’re coachable. They’re getting better every week.
“Peete was a receiver last year. He just keeps getting better and better at the quarterback position. I’m really proud of him.
“Jon’trell is a man amongst boys. When the other team sees him, they know he’s unblockable. He plays his butt off. You can throw to him too. He’s grown as a player. He stands out on the field and he truly is unstoppable.”
Valley Christian starts league play at home next Friday against United.
