On Thursday, July 14 racing returns to the Trumbull County Fair.
The BRP Tour of ground-pounding big-block Modifieds will headline the evening's racing. The Russ King Memorial race will take place at Expo Speedway. Russ King was the father of Rex King and started the King Brothers business. King Brothers is also adding an additional $2,500 to the purse. Rex and Sis King have also had a special trophy created for the event.
The series tours racetracks across Ohio, Pa., and N.Y.
Eric Rudolph of Ransomville N.Y. is the current point leader over the area's winningest Modified driver Rex King Jr. Dave Murdick long time racing veteran and winning driver of Butler Pa. holds down third while Brad Rapp of Erie Pa. is a close fourth. Flying Brian Swartzlander one of the strongest contenders is from Grove City and completes the top five. Local hot shot Jim Rasey of Southington should be on hand and join the field along with a host of others. The RUSH Sportsman Modifieds will also be on hand. Hot laps will be at 5:30 with racing at 6:00. Admission to the fair is only $12.00 including rides and grandstands. Seniors 62 & older can get in for $5.
Long-time race fans remember the glory days of Expo Speedway when they raced weekly from 1970 to 76 and again from 1979 to 1983. In 1995 the King family promoted four big races. It has since sat idled except for some fair events. The huge flat 5/8 oval has high-speed close racing. The event draws those who were there back when and the new race fans. I saw many a race there and I am so glad to get a chance to see another. Come on out to see the Thundering Herd circle the dirt oval.
