South Range wins 11th straight, tops Campbell in first round

BEAVER TOWNSHIP — The South Range boys soccer team has gotten off to slow starts in the past, but it always found a way to get ready for the postseason and this year is no different.

With a 14-0 win over Campbell Memorial on Wednesday, the Raiders (13-2-1) got another postseason run started and won their 11th straight game.

Sophomore Jack Staffeld scored twice in the first three minutes and classmate Logan Butcher added a hat trick in the first 11 to build a five goal advantage and the Raiders never looked back from there.

“It’s good to get going and hopefully continue on doing what we did tonight and keep going through the playoffs, get to the district finals and keep the mojo going,” South Range coach Zach Stamp said.

“Last year we started off slow too and unfortunately it’s sorta what we do. But it’s nice to start off slow at the beginning and once we get to the playoffs we finally click. But that 10-game win streak to end the season, which is 11 now going into district semis, has really helped.”

Wednesday didn’t just start off South Range’s playoff run, but it was also a significant night for senior midfielder Camden Thomas who set new single-season school records for goals and assists.

He tallied his 41st of the season by netting a breakaway in the 15th minute of the game. He dished out his 26th assist of the season to Owen Yeagley with just over a minute left in the first half to make it 12-0 and set that record as well.

“It’s kinda surreal to think that in the history of South Range, I have the most (goals and assists) in a season,” Thomas said. “But it’s obviously something that I couldn’t have done without my teammates and then all glory to god for giving me the gifts to be able to do it.”

At the beginning of his senior campaign, Thomas wasn’t so sure what this year would bring after only scoring 25 goals a year ago. But as the season has gone on he and his teammates have come together to put together a special year and even he is continuing to surprise himself.

“I had low expectations for us but obviously we have totally exceeded that and we’ve done a lot better than what I would’ve hoped for,” Thomas said.

While Thomas has been a key part of South Range’s success this year, the team has continued to get stronger as the year has gone on.

After a 4-2 loss to Boardman to start their season, the Raiders lost their only other game against Poland in a 6-1 decision. Since that game on Sept. 7, South Range has rattled off its 11-game winning streak and has only allowed six goals in the process. Along with beating teams like Lakeview, Girard, Jefferson, Niles and Hubbard, the Raiders also got their revenge on Poland with a 5-1 victory on Sept. 30.

“Going into that game (their loss) we knew they had a big unbeaten streak in the regular season so that win was a big stepping stone for us,” Stamp said. “It gave us a big win and also a part of the conference championship as well.”

Since South Range’s loss to Poland, Thomas said a bunch of things have changed for the Raiders.

“We finally got our formation figured out and everyone figured out their roles,” Thomas said. “Everyone figured out their individual roles and they are playing them really well and we started meshing as a team really well. We started playing for each other and the chemistry is just there now.”

Having outscored their last five opponents 45-0, the Raiders are hitting their stride just in time for a run at a District title and possibly more. They’ll continue that run next Tuesday when they take on the winner of No. 6 Badger and No. 11 Columbiana.
