Shelley Pratt is best pick for probate judge
DEAR EDITOR:
I am writing to express my support for Shelley Pratt for judge in the upcoming Trumbull County Probate Court election. In a time when accountability and public safety should be top priorities in our justice system, I believe Ms. Pratt represents the level of responsibility and fairness our community deserves.
One of the key reasons for my support is concern over a recent case handled by her opponent, in which an individual who caused a fatal accident while texting and driving received what many in our community feel was a far too lenient sentence. As an avid motorcycle enthusiast, distracted driving is not a minor mistake — it is a dangerous and entirely preventable behavior that can have devastating, irreversible consequences. When a life is lost because of it, the response from our courts should reflect the seriousness of that loss.
Judicial decisions send a message about what we, as a society, are willing to tolerate. Leniency in cases involving reckless behavior that results in death risks diminishing the value we place on human life and undermines public confidence in the justice system.
Another key reason is experience, which I believe Ms. Pratt has. Years spent in the courtroom can build knowledge, perspective and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure. However, experience alone should not be the only factor voters consider. There is a difference between someone who serves with purpose and someone who simply remains in a position out of habit or personal convenience. When judges or long-time public officials begin to view their role primarily to sustain themselves into their later years, rather than as a responsibility to serve the public, it raises serious concerns.
I believe that her opponent, Tom Campbell, is simply looking for an easy way to wind down his career on the bench, and his rulings may have serious consequences for some.
Ms. Pratt has demonstrated a commitment to upholding the law with both fairness and appropriate accountability. I believe she understands the importance of ensuring that consequences align with the severity of actions, especially in cases where negligence leads to tragedy.
For these reasons, I encourage fellow voters to carefully consider the kind of leadership they want on the bench and vote for Shelley Pratt for probate judge.
