Respect Poland library and its rich history
DEAR EDITOR:
The community of Poland, Ohio, is rich in history and tradition. There are more than 75 19th century homes in the village, many of which have been restored to their past glory. Located at the center of our town stands the Poland Public Library. Opened in 2001 and designed by an award-winning architectural firm, it incorporates one of our most important historic structures, the Poland Union Seminary Dormitory dating from 1846. This is a library to be proud of. People visiting our community for the first time marvel at this building that blends perfectly with the history of the Western Reserve.
That being said, residents are wondering why the library system would ever want to leave the present structure and location. What would happen to this building should they decide to do so? The trustees and the current administration of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County are not listening to the prevailing will of the people of Poland in considering such a move.
The library in its current location is within easy reach of our elementary schools and is often seen teeming with students after school. The spacious meeting room is frequently the scene of bridal and baby showers, graduation parties and meetings of every sort. Residents also use the wonderful cafe and the bookstore on the lower level. The library’s bucolic setting enhanced by the many large windows gives pleasure to visitors during every season. This is no ordinary building!
The present facility is structurally sound and could be repaired. As the Vice-President of the Poland Historical Society, I hope those in charge will vote to keep the library in its current location.
Please respect our history.
LARRY BARTOS
