Comments in support of public broadcasting

DEAR EDITOR:

Long ago, I signed up for monthly donations to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (NPR and PBS) and seldom regretted it. Although some of its programming is a bit woke for my taste, our nation’s unvarnished history and an alternative take of certain events give us a different perspective to consider as we form our opinions and vote.

PBS and NPR are accessible with an inexpensive TV antenna and FM radio for those who don’t have or can’t afford cable TV.

For that, you get children’s and nature programming, international news, historical topics, “Antiques Road Show” and exhaustive investigative reporting on such shows as “Frontline” and those that feature Rachel Maddow to name a few.

Removing government support for CPB is just another example of the Trump/Republican attack on our freedom of speech. Consider the CBS/Paramount shakedown, and attacks against libraries, universities and other voices of opposition.

Unless you need advice on what meds to ask your doctor about or what car insurance is best, CPB offers mostly ad-free entertainment, and a source for information no matter your political bent.

I tune in to Fox News and NewsMax from time to time and understand how some fellow Americans fall for Trump’s propaganda and lies.

Like them, I was turned off by our open borders, extreme gender issues and the lame response following George Floyd’s death and the liberal media coverage of the ensuing riots. But with voices against this administration’s extremism under growing pressure, we need a truthful voice that accompanies nonpolitical entertainment.
