A day of fun at Wick Recreation Area

DEAR EDITOR:

With all of the negative publicity Mill Creek MetroParks sometimes receives, I wanted to share a recent uplifting experience.

My 7-year-old granddaughter was visiting from California, and I had the chance to spend a morning with her. I decided to take her to the splash park at the Wick Recreation Area on the West Side.

When we arrived, a day camp was already there enjoying the facility. Children of all backgrounds were laughing, playing and making the most of the water features. It was a beautiful reminder of how public spaces can bring people together for simple, shared joy. Not long after, a group of individuals with disabilities arrived, accompanied by their caregivers. With big smiles and lots of enthusiasm, they joined in the fun — wheelchairs and all! Everyone, regardless of age, or ability, seemed to be enjoying the sunshine and the water. It was heartwarming to see how inclusive and welcoming the environment felt.

In a world that often feels divided or overwhelming, this day reminded me of the power of community and shared happiness. Sometimes, all it takes is a sunny day at a local park to restore a little hope and connection.
