We’ve somehow found ourselves in ‘1984’

DEAR EDITOR:

George Orwell warns us in his novel, “1984,” “Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past.”

The Trump regime appears determined to fulfill this dystopian prophecy with an executive order that seeks to remove “improper ideology” from revered cultural institutions.

The targets of his executive order Include not only the Smithsonian Museu

Focus has been placed upon the National Museum of African American History and Culture suggesting that history is up for the interpretation of the present regime.

Anti-DEI policies have eradicated volumes of critical information regarding women, people of color and references to gender from federal agencies such as the Defense Department, National Science Foundation, and the CDC. A chill overcame me when I realized the Stonewall National Monument website that once read LGBTQ has the letters “T” and “Q” deleted … as if transgender and queer people no longer exist.

The last thoughts of the exhausted and tortured main character in “1984” are submission to the totalitarian government as he can no longer maintain truth against the relentless deception. Let this not be us.
