Ohio GOP power plays already have begun

DEAR EDITOR:

A recent Vindicator editorial after Ohio’s midterm elections warned of one-party government. The GOP power plays have begun.

Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and Rep. Brian Stewart support a new resolution for constitutional amendments in our state that would require 60 percent of voter approval in order to pass, instead of 50 percent plus one. Their reasoning is that it would make it harder for “special interest groups” to change the state constitution.

Clearly, Ohio Republicans hope to weaken all voters’ power at the ballot box. Since they can’t keep issues they don’t agree with off the ballot, they are changing the rules to keep them from being passed. These include voters’ rights, workers’ rights and women’s health-care rights.

If passed through the Ohio Legislature by the end of the year as planned, voters will need to approve the change in May. Approval of this referendum will weaken voters’ choices and our checks on the Legislature.

Let the majority decide on reproductive rights, minimum wage and redistricting. We must soundly defeat this resolution to make sure Ohio voters’ voices are heard.
