Second Amendment not about overthrow

DEAR EDITOR:

These are the exact words of the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Where in the world do we get from these words to Matt Gaetz inferring that citizens must have these arms available to them to overthrow a government they feel is not acting in their best interest?

People like this Congressman who thinks he is the new alpha male are so dangerously short-sighted it is frightening.

This is the reason we need wise, level-headed leaders who can rightly discern our constitutional framers’ wisdom developing a country whose foundation is democracy.

Until we reconcile how dangerous Donald Trump was, and still is, to our democracy, we will likely succumb to these new “brown shirt” thugs who are advocating to overthrow our democracy and replace it with some form of distinct dictatorship.

The Senate’s failure to vote for a bipartisan independent commission to get to the truth behind the attempted overthrow of our government by loyalists of Donald Trump demonstrate the very reason the Second Amendment has nothing to do with sore losers.
