Gratitude to many for love of history

DEAR EDITOR:

With regards to recent published information by Mr. Richard Scarsella, president of the William Holmes McGuffey Society, I would have added some information. We would be quite remiss not to mention the hard work for years by the members of the society, many professors at YSU or the Youngstown school system, under Dorothy I. Morse and Clarence Morse. Also, all the citizens of Coitsville Township and Youngstown to procure the clear mortgage from Mr. and Mrs. Laurie who owned the property of the McGuffey Homesite in Coitsville Township.

I am one of the generations remaining who remembers how hard all these people worked so Mr. Richard Scarsella and the society could turn over the property to Mill Creek MetroParks.

We need to congratulate and applaud those who are no longer with us or to the remaining generation that was involved who remain. I am first-hand witness to attest to their fundraising, since I was a part of these activities as treasurer and secretary for the Coitsville Historical Society and Bicentennial Committee.

We held flea markets at the town hall, posted signage, had picnics with stone soup and chili, multiple parades and balloon launches, and we sold the McGuffey Readers reprint or the Update Book by editor Milton Revsin of Youngstown.

All these monies went to pay off the $68,000 mortgage.

Coitsville residents, I am sure are very happy and delighted to see the continued efforts by the McGuffey Society under R. Scarsella and Mill Creek MetroParks, but please continue to remember the efforts of past generations such as the direct descendants Mr. and Mrs. Tom Rogers and family, Arletta Rogers and Mrs. Helen Bair Owens and president of the National William Holmes McGuffey Society held at Miami University of Ohio.

We owe them remembrance for their love of history and the educational process so we can enjoy that beautiful homesite, with a glacial deposit called the drumlin, for the future generations.
