DEAR EDITOR:
Boardman Center School and Boardman police have a lot of explaining to do. Anyone who assaults a special needs child -- or any child -- with a stapler has no business working anywhere near children. If this incident made the news, I'm willing to bet it's not the first revolting thing this person has done. I'd like to know what Boardman schools' hiring policies are, namely, how they evaluate the qualifications and character of teacher's aide applicants.
I believe the person in question should have been fired immediately and had their credentials to work with children revoked. Even that falls far short of what should be done. According to news reports, this person attempted to staple a note to a child's head or hair because the student forgot to bring a water bottle?
What was Boardman police's justification for not filing charges? I'd like to know what police would have done if it were their kid. I doubt they would have left it alone.
The child and his parents deserve accountability and some form of justice. Other parents and children in Boardman and other communities deserve to know who this employee is. A criminal charge would be the surest way to keep others safe from him or her. I believe both the school district and Boardman Police Department are woefully negligent in handling this case, and the community deserves much better.
