Secure elections already exist in US

DEAR EDITOR:

I write in response to your editorial regarding our nation’s recent election, titled “Safeguards should instill faith in results,” on Nov. 15. There is no doubt that confidence in the security of the voting process is essential to our democracy, and, therefore, steps to address that concern matter to all of us.

What troubles me about the opinion piece is that it promotes the erroneous belief that voter fraud is the proverbial clear and present danger.

It concerns me greatly that people feel free to make this claim either directly or by inference without providing proof. If such evidence were available, perhaps more of the recent court challenges would have proceeded further. On the other hand, election officials of both parties from across the country have provided unanimous confirmation of the security of the process. To go on suggesting there is even the possibility of wide-spread improprieties creates a problem where none exists. If there is any distrust in this recent election, it is due to those who perpetrate this falsehood.

There is no reason not to have faith in the security of this process now and in the future, thanks to our local boards of election. Their dedicated full-time staffs along with the patriotic citizens who generously serve during the primaries and general elections do a difficult job and do it well. I have nothing but praise for these institutions and those who work with diligence and patience to protect the right of every citizen to exercise their franchise. They are the safeguards who instill the faith we need.
