Mourning in America

Today we mourn the death-by-execution of Alex Pretti and Renee Good. I use the term execution intentionally because they were murdered intentionally by Trump's goons. (I've seen the videos; I'm sure you have as well.) At times like this, Gandhi used to say, "The truth is revealing itself." To show our grief and solidarity, you might want to wear a black armband this week and light a candle in your window this evening and for the remainder of the week. But there is much more to do than mourn. As the labor leader Joe Hill asked in 1915 just before he was executed: "Don't mourn ... ...

What’s good for Navarro is good for Clinton

The walls are closing in — on Bill Clinton. The former president and practiced political escape artist is on the verge of being held in contempt of Congress. This time, the Democrat party, which stuck with him during his scandal-plagued 1992 campaign and during his 1998 impeachment, isn’t rallying to him in unison. The Republican-controlled House Oversight Committee just voted 34-8 to hold Bill Clinton in contempt for ignoring a congressional subpoena regarding the Epstein scandal, with nine Democrats voting in favor, eight voting against and two abstaining. In other words, ...

Husted among US senators hoping to aid national parks

Ohioans know full well our parks and public lands are national treasures in need of a little polishing. The list of repairs and deferred maintenance is only growing. And, though workers and administrators do their best, time and the elements do take their toll. It makes sense, then, that U.S. Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio, joined Sens. Angus King, I-Maine, and Steve Daines, R-Montana, in supporting the America the Beautiful Act to boost and reauthorize the Legacy Restoration Fund that could help address those challenges. “This bill would address more than $40 billion in deferred ...

Remember local businesses when snow finally melts

Been stuck in the house for a while? Made one last run at the big box store before the snow, ice and frigid temperatures hit and haven’t spent an extra dime since? One day, we will be through this arctic spell. We’ll need to venture out and do a little shopping. Maybe we’ll just be ready to eat at a restaurant after having gone through everything in the pantry at home. When that time comes, consider spending your money with a smaller, locally owned establishment. Those who have either been forced to close or have seen VERY little traffic because of this weather may be in ...

Trump can use military force in US just as Eisenhower did

Sorting through what exactly Alex Pretti did or did not do to provoke his death in Minneapolis at the hands of ICE agents is not enough to understand this tragedy. Pretti had a permit for his concealed weapon. But does the Second Amendment cover carrying it at an incendiary anti-ICE demonstration with motivation to do something? All this will be investigated and sorted out. But we need a bigger picture to put this tragedy in context. We must understand that our nation is now deeply splintered, with a divide where we no longer have shared common values. Consider that six years ...

Thank you, Minnesota, for fighting our nation’s battles

President Donald Trump and his federal forces chose the wrong city and state for the escalating war on civilians out on the streets and in their homes, resulting in two deaths so far. Minneapolis residents are defending city walls as best they can against masked federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who shot and killed two 37-year-old nonviolent resisters. Consider Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey’s political party, the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. In his first term, he handled 2020 marches — that exploded all over the country — over George Floyd’s choking death ...
