Senate bill would help workers gain necessary skills

Disappointing as much of it is, there is some work being done in Washington, D.C., that will actually make a difference for the rest of us. Ohioans, in fact, can point to the Employer-Directed Skills Act, introduced by U.S. Sens. Ted Budd, R-N.C., and Bill Cassidy, R-La.

U.S. Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio, says he has joined the effort, which would help employees get the training they need for in-demand skills that meet workforce needs.

There is also a component that would help employers find potential employees based on their participation in training programs.

“As Ohio continues to attract new employers and investment, we must make sure our workers are ready to step into these opportunities. Businesses need skilled workers, and this bill would help connect Americans with the training they need to land good-paying jobs. The Employer-Directed Skills Act would help Ohioans build the skills that lead to better jobs and higher wages. It’s a win for our workers and our businesses–strengthening our workforce and competitiveness without spending any additional taxpayer dollars,” Husted said.

Efforts to cut through red tape to help workers (and therefore, their employers and communities) succeed are always worth a look.

This one would help employers to identify prospective employees to participate in skills development programs selected by the employer; and provide partial reimbursements to employers for the costs of employer-directed skills development programs. It would develop performance indicators to ensure trainees receive high-quality instruction and are well-prepared for employment; and, it would encourage local workforce development boards to connect with employers that offer employer-directed skills development programs, according to Husted’s office.

Focusing on improving support for our workforce, right here at home, is essential — not just for the Buckeye State, but for the whole country. Surely this one will gain the momentum it deserves.
