Ohio BWC among best in America
Ohioans expect state government to do all in its power to leave as much of their hard-earned money in individuals’ and businesses’ pockets as possible. At least one agency — the state Bureau of Workers’ Compensation — continues to be recognized for its efforts to do so.
In its biennial study of the workers’ compensation premium rates in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services has once again ranked the Buckeye State fifth lowest in the country.
(In case you’re wondering, Oregon was 14th lowest.)
In addition to maintaining such a good ranking, Ohio’s premium index rate is actually lower than it was at the time of the same study two years earlier. Such an effort to do better for Ohio employers is a dramatic change from 2008, when the state had the third highest premiums.
But that’s not just a testament to those in Columbus, it has a lot to do with those in workplaces who have decided to focus on the safety and wellbeing of their employees.
“Ohio continues to be one of the best states for business owners,” said Gov. Mike DeWine. “Our workers’ compensation rates are among the lowest in the country, largely thanks to the dedication of Ohio’s workforce to workplace safety.”
BWC Administrator and CEO Stephanie McCloud said the agency’s goal is to create the best environment for employers to thrive. To that end, another 6% rate reduction is expected for private employers on July 1.
Imagine if other state agencies were able to work with employers with such focus — and success. While those agency leaders are surely looking to the BWC for best practices, we offer congratulations both to the bureau and to Ohio employers who decided to make a difference not just for themselves, but for their workers.
