Each year, Ohio’s communities host fairs and festivals that unite generations in summer fun. Among the resources that allow them to do that are the funds provided by Ohio’s County and Independent Fair Grant Program. This year, it distributed $10 million in grant funding to “support county and independent agricultural societies with improvements …”

The money is expected to be used for projects such as new grandstands, fixing or replacing old buildings, restroom facilities, parking and camping sites, electrical upgrades, lighting, signs and ADA accessibility improvements. That’s a lot of work to be done, and it is a testament to how important public officials know our fairs and festivals to be that every one of the 94 county and independent fairs that applied received money this year.

Agricultural societies from Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties all received $106,831.54.

The $10 million was distributed evenly among applicants with the average grant amount being $106,382.97. Two projects requested less than the average amount but were fully funded. All 94 eligible applicants applied for a total of $36.7 million.

“Ohio’s county and independent fairs are a longstanding pastime and are deeply embedded in the heart of our communities,” said Lydia Mihalik, director of the Ohio Department of Development. “By funding necessary improvements, we’re ensuring fairgrounds are safe, accessible, and enjoyable for all, allowing families to keep making memories for generations to come.”

State lawmakers are to be commended for ensuring those who applied had such funding available to them.

“We are investing in what is the heart of many of our rural communities and making vital improvements that will improve the fair experience all across Ohio,” said Lt. Gov. Jon Husted.

Hard to believe the experience created for visitors to our fairs and festivals could be improved upon, but no doubt organizers will use the money to do just that.

Don’t let their hard work go to waste, folks. Get out there this summer, and — wherever and whenever you are able — get to the fair!
